First Peregrine Falcon video of 2013

Peregrine Falcon watchers from  last year will remember that we occasionally capture video at the nestbox and share it.  Troy Kroeger captured the following video late last week of the male bringing the female a snack.  The victim appears to be a meadowlark.  The female seems to just want the food and has no desire to socialize.    Hopefully eggs are developing inside the female at this time.  The male will be asked to bring a steady supply of food …

Male Peregrine Falcon identified

I serendipitously caught the male in the nestbox Friday afternoon and snapped a series of screen shots. Fortunately, I was able to decipher the band combination,”19/K”. This is the same male present since 2003 and the only male Peregrine Falcon to sire offspring at the Capitol.   Thus, the same pair is back again for 2013. Mountain Lion Killed in Dawes County

LINCOLN, Neb. – A male mountain lion was shot and killed in the Pine Ridge in Dawes County on March 27 after the resident’s attempts to scare off the cat failed, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. The resident reported the incident to Game and Parks. The resident spotted the lion while walking along a creek near his home. He estimated that the lion was about 20 yards from him. Game and Parks Seeks Information on Mule Deer Case

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is seeking information in an investigation of deer shot and left in Red Willow County. Between March 20 and March 22, three mule deer were shot and left near an abandoned farm northwest of Indianola. One of the deer was left alive but injured when a conservation officer investigated the site March 23. One Capitol Peregrine identified

I finally captured a screen shot good enough to confirm the band of the adult female Peregrine Falcon.   The band reads “A” on the upper portion and “Y” on the bottom portion, or in other words, “A/Y”.  Thus, this is Alley, the female from Winnipeg, Manitoba, present since 2005.  This is the only female that has successful bred at the Capitol.  Now, getting a look at the male’s bands may prove to be much more challenging.  We should also …

North Platte Office Brings Luke Meduna on Board as Wildlife Biologist II

Luke Meduna was hired as a Wildlife Division-Management (WMA) Section, Fish & Wildlife Biologist II at the SW District Office in North Platte.  Meduna will be responsible for land management on over 12,500 acres of WMA in the northwest portion of the SW District. Among other duties, Luke will conduct surveys, respond to depredation, nuisance animal, Mt. lion, and disease response, supervision, season setting/game recommendations, regulation changes, and many administrative duties.
