Fine Day Yesterday on the Corne de Cerf

With yet another cold, wet weather pattern upon us here in the Heartland, I thought I’d share with you what a fine day it was yesterday on the river French Fur Trappers called Corne de Cerf, French for the horn of the elk, because of its meandering nature and tributaries. It was a nice spring day indeed to be on the Elkhorn! My buddy and I weren’t the only living, breathing things on the river this last Tuesday afternoon in April …

Join me this week on my WOWT-TV/Channel 6 outdoors segment when we preview the exciting living history weekend (May 4th & 5th) at Fort Atkinson State Historical Park located on the east edge of Fort Calhoun. Fort Atkinson has fascinating history and is one of my favorite state historical parks in Nebraska! Panhandle Passages with Justin Haag — Grand Slam? We’ll Settle for an At-bat

After reading numerous wild turkey hunting success stories on the Internet, I figure some might find comfort in hearing from someone who hasn’t been able to bag a tom this season. Two weekends in a row my 10-year-old son and I have failed to be within range to fire a shot at a tom. The two of us are far from being the most accomplished turkey hunters in the woods, but it seems the gobblers just aren’t as responsive in …

Line to Anglers: Don’t Hook, Tangle Wildlife!

Discarded fishing equipment such as abandoned line, hooks, weights, etc. continues to be a major problem for the environment and a major threat to an array of wildlife in and around the water. This …

R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Today is Arbor Day, in many ways an uniquely Nebraska holiday ( http://www.arborday.org/media/timeline.cfm ).  Earlier this week was “Earth Day”.  You may have read previous blog posts of my expressing my cynicism of the whole “earth day”, “stewards of the land”, message spouted one day or two days a year by many folks.  Personally, I hold that there are many who “talk the talk”, but on an individual basis fall far short from “walking the walk” of Arbor Day and Earth …

Great Plains Connections with Julie Geiser – Pelican Invasion

American White Pelicans made their presence known – it was a pelican invasion if you will. Pelicans are one of the world’s largest birds and the past week or two there were hundreds – maybe even thousands of them in west central Nebraska utilizing our rivers, interstate lakes and reservoirs. Every spring migration I look forward to seeing the pelicans. I’m not sure what it is that intrigues me about the pelican, but I sure love to watch this giant …

Hung Up Toms

A lot of turkey hunters ask me about this because it can make a hunt tough when that old Tom gobbles but then hangs up just out of range or fails to come in.  I have had that happen many times and there are a few tricks to help. First understand that when a Tom responds to your calls, keeping him gobbling may not be the best thing to do.  I have seen guys call back to a Tom several …
