Those Pesky Jakes

Now I know there is a large contingency of turkey chasers that feel a turkey is a turkey and will readily take a jake with ill effect to their psychy. Understand I have nothing against them. I like jakes. Heck, my dog is named Jake. But true to their upbringing, jakes can screw up a hunt like nobody’s business. Jakes are like a gange of teenagers. Young adolescent birds that hang out together. By themselves they are not much threat …

Respect the Snows

It is just human nature I guess. We take out the stops, bag limits, shell limits, equipment limits and, over time, we seem to value something less. Sometimes, I think that is the case for the snow goose. Don’t get me wrong…I love to chase these critters as much as anyone but after a few years of chasing these birds I have come to a new level of respect. To say the snow goose is an intelligent bird is to …

Great Plains Connections: Chasing Sunsets

Every chance I get I’m out chasing the sunset – I’m hooked on chasing the setting sun. There is a little homework that must be done before the sun goes down to get the perfect image of a good sunset. I check the sky late in the afternoon to see if there is good cloud cover that will hopefully make a gorgeous reflection of the sun’s setting colors or clouds with interesting shapes in them – but not too many …

The Sanity of Camping

Spent the other night basking in the magnifique of Bluestem Lake with the camper and friends and man was that time well spent. Funny how a campfire, some good food and friends can help clear the mind and warm the soul. There is still plenty of camping opportunity this summer and with the weather we have been having I cannot imagine not getting out. Camping is a “sport” made for 60 degree night temps and luckily we have that. I …

Playing the Purple Worm!

This month of June is usually a tough one for me.  It is the first of two months in Nebraska that has no open hunting season.  Now, ordinarily this would seem perilous but the fishing has been so good this June that I think I will make it to the squirrel season opener!  You need to get out there too! My favorite tactic is fishing for large-mouth bass with a 6″ purple worm.  The dark purple seems to work best …

Sandhill Swans

Today was a great day in the sandhills!! The day was windy and partly sunny but it made for a great day of viewing 14 trumpeter swans on a sandhills lake. I love the sandhills! There is so many cool places to see and take in. Anyone that can get away for a Sunday drive should consider a drive to the sandhills of Nebraska. These 14 swans were simply beautiful to watch, they are a massive bird. It was with …
