Been Around Some More

P1050056

I have continued to be “out of the office” with some frequency the past few weeks.  Have continued to get around the state and dry off a few while I was at it.  Time for a report. . . . How far have I been?  Well, far enough to see some sights! Caught some fish while I was out there! Thanks for sharing your fishing spot with us, Robby! Then I met up with my kids for a few days …

Spring Passed

P3190005

The last day I walk off the ice every winter is a bad day.  I hate that day.  Oh sure, I am on the water or in the field somewhere in Nebraska twelve months of the year, but I really love ice-fishing. So I kind of ease into spring.  You know what it is like in early spring. . . well, more like winter many days.  Sure, we will get a day or two of beautiful, warm, sunny weather, but …

Fall Surveys

PA060004

My friend Steve Moseley recently “road along” with one of our field crews doing some of our annual fall, fisheries sampling.  Steve is a writer for the York News-Times and he wrote a great story about his experience.  For those of you interested in Nebraska fish and fishing, interested in the work done by pointy-headed fish biologists, you will enjoy Steve’s article.  Follow the link, take some time, read it!  Oh yeah, there are some pictures too! Game and Parks …

A Break, and Some Thoughts

P3180014

Other than my wife and daughter, I have had little interaction with any other humans for the past several days.  Anytime I touch a surface, or come within 10 yards of another person, off I go to wash my hands. At least to this point, our governor has not ordered us to lock down for a couple of weeks.  So, yes, I would still tell you that you can sneak away for a little fishing and practice social distancing. I …

Delayed New Year

SandhillsCrappie2020ZCox

You may have heard me say before that my calendar is a little different.  Most folks recognize January 1 as New Year’s Day.  My “New Year” starts the first day I walk onto the ice for the season.  “New Year” can start some time in December, or maybe later than that.  This year, unfortunately, it has been later, too much later. I was hopeful “New Year’s Day” was going to be around the end of December.  At that time, I …

I’m Not Kidding This Time, Now It Really Is Mid-Winter

P2130022

A few weeks ago I blogged about my adventures on the ice and according to the calendar I titled it a “mid-winter ice report”.  Well, you all know what the weather has been like since then, and even though the calendar says it is the end of February, all the snow and slush on the ice tells me we now are in mid-winter. Certainly our weather and ice conditions have been what we usually see in mid-winter, but I still …

What Lurks Beneath, Nov. 2018, and an Update

Fall2018Saugeye

Our Nebraska Game & Parks Commission fisheries biologists are finishing up their fall fish sampling around the state.  I am starting to hear a few stories about what they sampled, will be getting data summaries and starting to put together next year’s Fishing Forecast in the coming weeks. Once again let me post a disclaimer before I show you the pictures:  When pointy-headed fisheries biologists sample fish populations they are NOT trying to capture the biggest fish in a population.  …

Mid-Winter Blues?

IMG_0685

I have still been on the ice every chance I get and again have had a chance to roam the state a bit. . . . Yes, ice conditions are variable.  With the stinkin’ mid-winter rains we have had, ice conditions in southeast Nebraska especially have not been nearly as good as many of us would like.  The run-off has softened the ice around shorelines and in some cases other parts of several waters.  In addition, our pits and interstate …

Adventure Report, June 5, 2013

A couple of months ago I warned that I would be “out of the office” as much as possible.  Well, I have been; have enjoyed this spring immensely.  In fact I have enjoyed it so much that I have not given a fishing report recently.  Time to get caught up. . . . Lewis & Clark To start, I have to go back a couple weeks, back before the Memorial Day holiday.  Some of the Nebraska Walleye Association folks, http://www.nebraskawalleye.com/ …
