Hunting Withdrawal Syndrome

“A man may not care for golf and still be human, but the man who does not like to see, hunt, photograph, or otherwise outwit birds or animals is hardly normal. He is supercivilized and I for one do not know how to deal with him.”  – Aldo Leopold. It’s mid-June and I’m grumpy. There’s yard work to be done, household projects to be completed, weekly errands to be ran, and a variety 0f other tasks that need to be accomplished. Ugh, the rat race gets …

Paradox

I fully realize our spring turkey season is over, officially closed on the last day of May, and I know most have been done hunting for a long time now.  In this world of “what’s new, what’s next?” no one wants to read about that old news.  But, I have some thoughts rattling around in my head and I need to put them down in writing.  You can read them too if you want. . . . I spent a …

The Bittersweet Last Turkey of Spring

With May 31 being the last day, the end of turkey season is near.  Though our Nebraska spring season is long, the end is always tough to take for us addicted to chasing the gobble – even when it ends successfully.  Here’s how mine ended this past holiday weekend… Saturday morning I rolled out of bed at 4:00 a.m., checked radar and climbed back under the covers when it revealed a large, colorful swath of rain parked itself on top …

Nebraska: Nice Spring Turkey Hunting!

The Nebraska Tourism Commission announced this week that it approved a new brand campaign, entitled: “Nebraska Nice.” This campaign emphasizes one of Nebraska’s strongest assets — us, it’s people. However, “Nebraska Nice” has a two-fold meaning.  It’s not only about we-Nebraskan’s being nice to our visitors and to each other, as we are, but it’s also a reference to the “nice moments” that make the best vacations memorable and special.  It’s about that special moment that is talked about for years and years to come. …

Friday Funny: Turkey Talk

Here’s a #FridayFunny I came across on the Internet from Fatal Approach (Game) Calls about spring wild turkey hunting. The other day, I saw two big gobblers checking out me in my hunting blind. I think they were talking about turkey calling ability (or lack thereof)! That’s why they wouldn’t come within shooting range! Can turkeys laugh? Have a safe, fun weekend in the field. It’s all about making memories and the stories of the hunt! Remember, the helicopter incident with our Jeff Rawlinson of Game and Parks and his …

Six Steps to Succulent Spring Turkey

Harvesting a wild turkey in the springtime is quite an accomplishment in the Nebraska hunting scene! When that gobbler, jake or bearded hen is down, there’s the high five with your hunting partner in the blind, along with an immediate cancelling of the tag on your turkey permit, plus the various photo ops with your bird, of course. After all of that takes place, the work begins on establishing the best-tasting wild turkey possible at the dinner table. Here are six steps to follow to a succulent spring turkey. Prompt …

Kids, Turkeys and Tips

If you’re a seasoned, veteran turkey hunter like me, one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll find is to take a kid to the field for the spring season! No question!
