Grandmaster of Turkey Hunting on Saturday Morning Radio Show

With Nebraska’s spring wild turkey hunters taking to the timber, I bring (who I believe to be) the Grandmaster of Wild Turkey Hunting to you on my one-of-a-kind, Saturday morning Great Outdoor Radio Show. Who is the Grandmaster of  Turkey Hunting? It’s this man! None other than legendary turkey hunter, veteran turkey call maker, and humorist Dick Turpin of Lincoln, NE! Dick joins me LIVE along with his sidekick Dudley Moore on my hour-long program airing tomorrow (Saturday) morning  from 9-10 a.m. …

Turkey Hunting Lessons from Last Spring

It’s time to chase some gobblers. Nebraska’s season opened for archery hunting on it’s usual March 25 date, this past Tuesday.  My brother Gabe and I celebrated by taking the decoys out for a sit.  The birds are still in winter flocks where I hunt. This means either you are covered up in birds or you have plenty of time to think. So, as the cardinal sang I started reviewing my 2013 season and what it may have taught me …

Dogs of the Conservation Order Complete the Hunt

“The journey of life is sweeter when traveled with a dog …” Unknown. I have always commented that dogs complete the hunting experience, especially when it comes to waterfowl.  This is so true in the current Light Goose Conservation Order hunting period on Snow and Ross’s Geese here in Nebraska! I have been fortunate to witness some outstanding dog work with some affectionate canines! I thought I’d share some of the images I captured by digital camera of these four-legged hunting companions along with their owners. Above, this is Copper, …

My Marsh Madness: Selection Sunday Light Goose Hunt

Yesterday was an exciting day for college basketball in this state with both Creighton and Nebraska qualifying for the March Madness of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament in the same region (congrats to both the Jays and the Huskers, and they may even end up playing each other!). But for me, ‘selection Sunday’  as it is so named, meant ‘marsh madness.’ As you may be able to tell, I spent the entire day hunting light geese (Snow and Ross’s geese) during the Conservation Order hunting period on a friend …

Spring Gobbler Withdrawals, The Cure

The temperature is hovering around zero degrees Farenheit outside of our house in Omaha’s Metcalfe Park neighborhood this early March morning. I’ve now begun to count the days until the archery edition of Nebraska’s spring wild turkey hunting seasons kicks off. I’m certain that the birds on my hunting property are still bunched up as they were a couple weeks ago. It shouldn’t be too much longer before wild turkey courtship rituals enter the picture, right? I know that breeding is dictated by photoperiod (day length or amount …

Goose Season Closes with Young Guns, Memories of Young Faces

I closed the Canada goose hunting season in Nebraska’s East Management Unit yesterday afternoon.  And, a fine afternoon hunting session it was despite the frigid temperatures! I was invited to hunt with top Canada goose calling ‘young guns’ Nick Bilava, Casey Eikmeier and Weston Cooper along with their highly-trained hunting dogs. It was an incredible experience hunting with the seasoned young fellas on their beautiful spread! Whenever you have the chance, hunt with the younger crowd, do it! Share what you know! …

Goose Hunting Highlights

I’ve been awfully busy on a number of different outdoor fronts as of late, but I wanted to share some quick highlights of Sunday’s Canada goose hunting adventure on Lost Island along the Platte River in Butler County, NE. Special thanks to landowner, conservationist, expert waterfowler and good friend Kyle Simpson who arranged the hunt with youth on his property which has outstanding waterfowl habitat! Thanks again, Kyle!  By the way, Kyle hates to have his picture taken, HA, gotcha anyway, Simpson! Here …
