Wagon Train Fish Attractors

WTrainBrush2022

The water level at Wagon Train Reservoir south of Lincoln is down several feet right now.  We will be doing some maintenance and modifications on previous aquatic habitat work there.  Eventually, a rotenone renovation will be done as well. There are numerous cedar trees around Wagon Train that need removal.  While the water is down, those cedar trees might as well end up as fish attractors in the reservoir.  Volunteers and fisheries staff muscled 300 cedar trees into the reservoir …

Fisheries Research

IMG_1309

Research is just one of many jobs done by the Fisheries Division of the Nebraska Game & Parks Commission.  Yes, we have a research staff that does some of that work.  But, we cannot get it done all by ourselves.  Over the years we have contracted with several universities to do some of that research.  The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has and continues to be an important partner.  We completed several years of research on our sandhill lakes in conjunction with …

Merritt Fish Attractors

MerrittFishAttractors2021b

Got this note from Brandon Maahs, one of our field biologists in north-central Nebraska: Need a new fishing hotspot? Be on the lookout for new artificial habitat structures in Merritt Reservoir this year. NGPC Fisheries staff have built and are ready to deploy at least 30 modified Georgia Cubes. Years of siltation, erosion, and decay of submerged trees has reduced the overall habitat complexity within Merritt Reservoir. Adding artificial habitat, such as these PVC cubes, can help replenish degraded natural …

Fish Attractors at East Gothenburg

IMG_0796

Last month some of our wildlife biologists and fisheries biologists teamed up for a little project.  Many of our wildlife areas could use some cedar tree thinning.  Dropping them in the water will attract fish.  The recent effort I want to tell you about was done at East Gothenburg interstate lake.  Here are a few pictures: Those cedar trees will be in the water now, and there will be fish in them!

Fish Attractor Opportunity

Brushpile

When we, the Fisheries Division of the Nebraska Game & Parks Commission, does an Aquatic Habitat rehabilitation project, our goals are usually much larger than just providing a few fish attractor structures.  Do not get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with brush piles, log cribs, root wads, broken concrete, etc. that can be placed in a waterbody to attract fish and make them easier to find and catch.  But, when we are doing a rehabilitation project we usually have …

Updates

Breakwater (3)

Got a couple of updates on Aquatic Habitat/Angler Access/Renovation projects.  As a matter of fact, I blogged about both of these back in September, Some News Items, September 2017. Merritt Reservoir As noted the boat ramp/angler access project at Merritt Reservoir was long-awaited and postponed for a year or two because of high water levels.  Now, I will NEVER complain about high water in any of our irrigaiton reservoirs, but in this case it did delay the new boat ramp …

Reservoir Updates

I have a couple, three news items about Nebraska reservoirs.  None of them are long but I need to get this information out. . . . Conestoga Reservoir Just a quick heads-up for anglers and boaters who might want to use Conestoga Reservoir this spring.  That reservoir is found west of  Lincoln, between the towns of Denton and Emerald, and there has been some ice damage to the boat ramp. There will be at least one section of ramp that …
