Trout Slam Update, End of 2023

TroutSlamCertificateDB

Have not given an update on Trout Slam recipients since this spring.  Admittedly, a big reason I have not done that is because there were very few entries most of this year.  Then we stocked cutthroat trout again this fall, and the entries started pouring in! Entries have slowed down again now, so let me summarize what we have had come in. . . . Trout Slam certificates and pins will be in the mail for 28 Trout Slams that …

Brook Trout Spawning

BrookTrout01

Almost every fish in Nebraska waters spawns at some time during the spring.  That can occur from early, early spring all the way through summer.  So, yes, I am stretching when I use the word “spring” to describe the timing of that reproductive activity. However, that wording is correct because they do not spawn in the fall. With two exceptions. . . . Brown trout and brook trout in Nebraska are fall spawners.  Yes, we do have populations of both …

Trout Stream Gem in Northeast Nebraska

A classic case of misrepresentation keeps occurring. Folks, especially those new to the Cornhusker State, continue to express their disbelief to me that a crystal clear, cold, spring-fed trout fishing stream exists in northeast Nebraska. “No way,” they’ll say. “Impossible in farm country,” they’ll say. “You’re drinking, can’t be,” they’ll say.  “I’ve driven through there and never seen it,” they’ll say. These are just some of the phrases people have uttered to me about the East Branch of the Verdigre …

Trout Slam Update, Spring 2023

JustinPowellTroutSlam2022Collage

It has been a while since I gave an update on Trout Slam finishers.  The last update was last fall, and there have not been a lot of entries since then.  But, there have been a few, and a few anglers who have completed their Trout Slam, so I need to do an update. We just recently mailed Trout Slam certificates and pins to seven anglers.  You can see the list of all our Trout Slam recipients, but I will …

Trout Slam Update, Summer 2022

ScottJohnsonTroutSlam2022

It has been a while since I have done a Trout Slam update; here it is: We have had 15 Trout Slams completed so far in 2022.  Fourteen different anglers have completed the Trout Slam this year; one angler has completed it twice this year.  Of the fourteen anglers that completed a Trout Slam in 2022, seven of them have completed at least one Trout Slam previously.  Four of those “repeats” completed their second Trout Slam (Kurt Seevers, Justin Bignell, …

Golden Brown

I have commented before that when you spend enough time in the field or on the water, you will see some unusual things.  Pointy-headed fisheries biologists handle thousands of fish.  Sure, we see some exceptionally large specimens and occasionally we see some other oddities. Unusually-colored fish get a lot of attention.  The “interwebs” often have photos of oddly-colored fish or fish with other weirdness.  I believe part of the reason for the occurence of those oddities is fish produce so …

Bordeaux Creek

DSCN2987

I have some news about an Aquatic Habitat project and evaluation underway in the beautiful Pine Ridge of Nebraska: Stream renovation underway at Bordeaux Creek WMA Workers have begun a project to improve a stream and its banks at Bordeaux Creek Wildlife Management Area near Chadron. Brett Roberg, a Nebraska Game and Parks Commission fisheries biologist, said the project on Big Bordeaux Creek is expected to increase stream-angling opportunities, provide cleaner water and increase resilience to drought and flooding. The …

Trout Slam, A Long Time Coming

I mentioned in the latest Trout Slam Update that my son and I had finally completed our Trout Slams.  It took us far too long to finally get back to the northwest corner of our great state where we could check off brook and cutthroat trout.  Simply put, a person has to visit that corner of Nebraska to complete a Trout Slam.  What a great excuse to go there! Let me go back and rehearse my Trout Slam and make …

Trout Slam Update, Fall 2021

TroutSlamMestonFall2021

I promise, we have not forgotten about Trout Slam certificates.  Quite a few entries came in this fall; time to get a batch of certificates sent out and time to give you an update! There will be sixteen certificates sent out to fifteen different anglers.  Ten anglers completed their first Trout Slam.  Of the other six, three completed their second Trout Slam and three completed their third Trout Slam.  One, Eric Einspahr from Lincoln, finished his second Trout Slam and …
