Adventure Report, Ten Yards, and . . . .

It is my job to tell folks about the great fishing opportunities we have in Nebraska.  Yes, Nebraska is my home state, has been for several generations on both sides of my family, and I am very proud of what our state has to offer.  There are those who believe I get a little carried away with that, especially when it comes to fishing opportunities, because Nebraska is not one of those places renowned as a fishing destination.  Yet, I …

Kids, Turkeys and Tips

If you’re a seasoned, veteran turkey hunter like me, one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll find is to take a kid to the field for the spring season! No question! Be sure to check the regulations/requirements for youth turkey hunting here in Nebraska. You’ll note that there are no minimum age restrictions and that the youth turkey hunting permit price is only $5.00! Conservation Officer Rich Berggren of Waterloo, NE, myself, and many, many others at Game and Parks …

April 2014 NEBRASKAland

The April 2014 NEBRASKAland is available on line right now. I love the cover!  Mouth full of teeth, big marble eyes, classic orange and chartreuse jig in its lips, CLASSIC!  Love it! To go along with the picture there is a great story inside on page 38 about our walleye egg collection efforts which are happening right now (something that I am out in the field helping with as I write this!). There are some great old stories about big …

Early Season is for the Birds

Man, woman and child! It is finally here! This early season on turkeys is just a hoot. A lot of fun but it will tax you. One day they can be gobbling like mad, walking about like a lost puppy, the next day they are back in large groups acting like they don’t know you from tree bark. Welcome to the early season! The advantage we archers have is that we have the best chance of being in the field …

With Nebraska’s spring wild turkey hunters taking to the timber, I bring (who I believe to be) the Grandmaster of Wild Turkey Hunting to you on my one-of-a-kind, Saturday morning Great Outdoor Radio Show. Who is the Grandmaster of  Turkey Hunting? It’s this man! None other than legendary turkey hunter, veteran turkey call maker, and humorist Dick Turpin of Lincoln, NE! Dick joins me LIVE along with his sidekick Dudley Moore on my hour-long program airing tomorrow (Saturday) morning  from 9-10 a.m. …

Snuck Out. . .

Yes, I know the correct grammar is “sneaked out” but that just does not sound right to me.  Consider “Snuck Out” to be my redneck version, and that is exactly what I did. . . . March has been a busy month for me.  I worked a couple of weekends finishing up sport and boat shows for the spring, but as  I promised you in a blog post a couple of weeks ago, I would get on the water when …

Throwback Thursday: MONSTER!

Did you know that Nebraska has one of the most fascinating accounts of a Loch ness-style lake monster on what is now a state recreation area? According to a 1923 article in the Omaha World-Herald newspaper, a man named J.A. Johnson claimed that he and two friends had seen a creature dwelling in what was then called Alkalai Lake (now Walgren Lake State Recreation Area) near Hay Springs in northwest Nebraska. He stated that he knew of forty others who had …

Pretty Trout Stream on WOWT 6 Outdoors

For my Weekly Outdoor Report on Omaha’s WOWT 6 News, we’re heading to one of my favorite places in Nebraska to do some trout stream fishing – about three hours northwest of the metro area. Take a look at the photo below. Know where we’re going? See how clear the water is in this pristine, spring-fed creek. My wife Polly loves to fish it and catch rainbow trout which are stocked weekly! Prized, wild brown trout thrive in this creek as well. I enjoy catching …
