Public Asked to Report Sick or Dead Deer

LINCOLN – Hunters are asked to report observations of sick or dead deer to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission as they head afield this September. Each summer, the Commission monitors for signs of diseased deer; reports from the public help track incidents. Deer populations in Nebraska have been healthy across most areas and last year’s harvest resulted in near-record numbers. Few cases of sick deer have been reported so far this year. LINCOLN – Nebraska deer, antelope and elk permits will be available for purchase on a first-come basis beginning at 1 p.m. Central time on July 11. Residents, nonresidents and eligible landowners will be able to purchase remaining deer and antelope permits, and residents and eligible landowners will be able to purchase remaining elk permits. LINCOLN – Residents and nonresidents may apply for one 2016 Nebraska deer permit in any draw unit beginning June 13, and residents may apply for one elk permit and one buck or either-sex antelope permit in available units. The application period begins at 1 p.m. Central Time (CT) on June 13. Three Positives for CWD Found in Recent Testing of Deer

LINCOLN – The presence of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in Nebraska deer has spread eastward, according to findings by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. The Commission conducted a CWD sampling operation in its Northeast District deer check stations during the 2015 November firearm deer season. Three samples tested positive for CWD. Clear Creek Wildlife Management Area (WMA) offers a great public area to hunt – located near Lewellen the WMA is a short travel distance for those in central and southwest Nebraska and a go-to destination for others.
