Kayak Kid Essay Contest deadline is Oct. 15

LINCOLN, Neb. – It’s not too late to enter the Southwest Reservoirs Kayak Kid Essay Contest, which rewards two youth who best express their appreciation for the outdoor recreational opportunities in southwest Nebraska.

Fishing, hunting, wildlife viewing, boating and kayaking are just a few of the many outdoor opportunities available in southwest Nebraska. Spending time outside teaches life lessons that young men and women can treasure and value.

The contest requires a hand-written 250-word essay explaining why the writer values a life in the outdoors. The entry must include a photo of the writer at one of the southwest region reservoirs or parks, including Johnson Lake, Elwood Reservoir, Gallagher Canyon Reservoir, Lake Maloney, Sutherland Reservoir, Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park and State Recreation Area, Enders, Medicine Creek, Rock Creek Lake, Red Willow or Swanson Reservoir.

Competition is in two age divisions – 10 to 14 years and 15 to 18 years. Winners of each division will receive an Emotion Spitfire Kayak, paddle and lifejacket.

The entry deadline is Oct. 15, 2018. Mail essays to Swanson Reservoir SRA, 36166 Road 44B, Trenton, NE 69044. Include the essay writer’s name, address and phone number with the essay and photo.
