More trout stockings for Omaha, Lincoln, Mahoney SP

LINCOLN, Neb. – More rainbow trout are being stocked in Omaha, Lincoln and Eugene T. Mahoney State Park waters this month to provide excellent fishing opportunities this winter. Trout are being stocked the week of Dec. 14 at Omaha’s Standing Bear Lake (3,750 trout) and Mahoney’s CenturyLink Lake (3,500). Two Omaha rainbow trout stockings rescheduled

LINCOLN, Neb. – Catchable-size rainbow trout will be stocked in three Omaha waters Oct. 16. The Grove Trout Rearing Station in Antelope County will stock 450 trout at Hitchcock Park Pond, 300 at Towl Park Pond and 3,750 at Standing Bear Lake. The stockings at Hitchcock and Towl parks were scheduled for Oct. 15, but snow in Omaha over the weekend left the grass wet in areas where the stocking truck would have to drive. Family Fishing Event at Carter Lake on Aug. 6

LINCOLN – Omaha families can join the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission for an evening of fun at a Family Fishing Event on Aug. 6 at Carter Lake. Big Peregrine news – a new Nebraska nest!

So Nebraska only has two pairs of nesting Peregrine Falcons, correct?  Well, not anymore…… I was recently contacted by Laura King-Homan of the Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) who informed me that they have a pair of Peregrine Falcons nesting on their smokestack at their power plant located in north Omaha.  I was aware they had placed a nest box on a smokestack years ago and had recently observed at least one adult Peregrine Falcon in the area, but the news …

Capitol Peregrine progeny takes over in Omaha

Our friends over at the Woodmen (http://falcons.woodmen.org/) in Omaha announced this morning a mystery that was covertly solved late last week.   There is a new male Peregrine Falcon at the Woodmen this spring, supplanting the long-lived Zeus.  Surprise, surprise, the new male Peregrine in Omaha was hatched at the Capitol in 2010.   It has the band combination 57/H and was assigned the name “Mintaka” as a result of our “name-the-chicks” contest. Let me be honest. What you’ll see in the attached video is not entirely accurate. I did briefly drag my feet in the middle of my run down the Mahoney State Park Toboggan Run. Why?
