LINCOLN, Neb. – Logan Maring and Wesley Beavers know their catfish. Each correctly guessed the exact weight of Walter, the flathead catfish, in a contest by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission during the Nebraska State Fair. Walter weighed 47 pounds, 7 ounces. In guessing the weight, Maring, of Grand Island, won the adult division and Beavers, 5, of Collins, Iowa, won the youth division. Fish have been displayed at the Nebraska State Fair almost since there was a state fair.  We know live fish were displayed at the State Fair back in 1885, and they have been there almost every year since.  This year is no exception as fish were collected from all corners to the state and hauled to the state fair last week.  Fish are collected primarily by electrofishing, hauled on pickups and then displayed for the duration of the fair in …

Tomorrow morning I’ll be bound for our brand new Nebraska Game and Parks Commission exhibit at the NE State Fair in Grand Island’s Fonner Park. I can’t wait to work it all day! Fish have been displayed at the Nebraska State Fair almost every year since 1885.  There was a year, 1898, when there was no funding for displaying fish at the state fair, and in 1976 no fish were displayed because a new aquarium complex was under construction.  That complex housed fish every year at the state fair in Lincoln until the fair moved to Grand Island.  We have not had fish at the state fair since it moved to Grand Island …

LINCOLN – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will debut a state-of-the art interactive outdoor experience – Outdoor Encounter – at the 2014 Nebraska State Fair. The Outdoor Encounter includes an aquarium, archery range and shooting gallery.
