Tips for Late-Season Deer Hunting in Nebraska

It is the late period for deer hunting now and things can sure get tougher. In fact, things can even get tougher than they were during the regular firearm deer hunting season. After all, the rigors of the rut are pretty much over. But don’t put away your gear! Hear me out. I want to use a football analogy that many of you who hunt deer will understand when it comes to the late-season. For a football team, it is …

13 Tips for Archery Deer Hunting During the Rut

It’s a magical time of year, really. As daylight wanes, the temperature begins to drop, frost appears on the pumpkin, leaves turn color and start toppling to the ground, and experienced bowhunters know the deer rut or breeding season is underway. Buck rubs on trees and scrapes on the ground are apparent. A buck rub on an eastern cedar tree in rural Sarpy County, NE. Photo by Greg Wagner/Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. Major Changes to Getting Landowner Permits

Okay, here’s the scenario. Say you’re a deer hunter and you hunt on your mom’s land. Your mom owns 160 acres of farm land in southeast Nebraska. Therefore, she is what is called the “qualifying landowner,” a.k.a. the QLO of the property. She does not hunt, has never held a landowner deer hunting permit and does not purchase landowner deer permits herself. However, with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s (NGPC) new permit system, she must have an account established …

Key Messages for Archery Deer Opener on Channel 6 Outdoors

I’ll be covering key messages for Nebraska’s popular archery deer hunting season opener on my  WOWT-TV/Channel 6 Outdoor Report this week. The season kicks off on Sunday! One of the messages I’ll be relaying to fellow deer hunters this season  is the importance of wearing a tree stand safety harness. The Voice of Teddy Roosevelt

I perform a wide variety of duties here at the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and honestly love every challenging minute of it! A couple weeks ago Ralph Wall who does a fantastic job of shooting video and making video productions for the agency, I might add, hit me up to be the voice of one of our country’s first conservation-minded presidents — Theodore Roosevelt. “Say what? Are you serious, Ralph?” was my response to his asking me to be the …
