Spring Wipers

You all know I am a huge fan of In-Fisherman and all of their products.  Their system for catching fish flat out applies to every water you fish, everywhere–including Nebraska!  As a matter of fact, their editors/writers have fished Nebraska waters, many times.  Most recently, you need to watch this segment from their TV show; it was filmed on Lake McConaughy and it will apply to wiper fishing anywhere you fish!  Follow this link to watch it, McConaughy wipers .

Pike eat Pike World

You know I love the whole predator eats prey “thing”.  Those dramas are fascinating to me and if you are an angler, you better have a good understanding of those relationships.  To catch fish, you not only have to figure out where they are, you have to get them to bite.  That is why having an understanding of what your target fish are preying upon is doubly important. I found this video on the internet, and I love it.  No, …

Snuck Out. . .

Yes, I know the correct grammar is “sneaked out” but that just does not sound right to me.  Consider “Snuck Out” to be my redneck version, and that is exactly what I did. . . . March has been a busy month for me.  I worked a couple of weekends finishing up sport and boat shows for the spring, but as  I promised you in a blog post a couple of weeks ago, I would get on the water when …

Muskie Meeting

I am planning to be at the HUSKERland Muskie Hunters meeting this coming Wednesday night, April 2.  Their meeting will start at 7:00 p.m. and will be held at the Omaha Scheels store.  Show up a little early, we will meet in front of the Ferris wheel and then go downstairs to the meeting room. I will always tell you that one great way to become a better angler is to join a club!  There are several good Nebraska fishing …

Think Warm

It has been a typical Great Plains spring so far.  Sure, we have open water now, but the water is darned cold and the weather is schizophrenic.  Everyone is so eager to have open water to fish that folks cannot wait to hit the water after the ice is gone, but in my opinion this early spring period is one of the toughest times of year to catch fish.  The water is just too cold and the weather too up …

So you want to learn to fish?

I will tell you that I do not believe in “luck.” However, “luck” has been described as “the residue of hard work” and “where preparation meets opportunity” and those descriptions definitely apply to fishing and to good anglers.  Those anglers who seem to always catch fish and catch big fish are not the “luckiest” anglers, they are the most skilled.  I believe that there are some fundamental skills that apply to fishing, just like any other sport has fundamental skills, and …

Why? What?

In recent years there has been a lot of research into the motivation of anglers.  Most of that has been done because we believe we need to better understand anglers and why they fish in order to recruit more of them to fish and keep them fishing.  There is a lot of truth to that.  I am not going to review all of that research, but I do want to mention a few things that have stuck in my mind. …

It’s a Wrap

Well it finally happened, looks like we are done ice-fishing for the year.  The last day I walk off the ice is one of the saddest days of the year for me. But it was a great ice season!  My partners and I had almost 3 full months on the ice this winter–the way it should be.  We were drilling holes all the way up through last weekend. So, consider this as my last ice report for this year; let …

Tourney Time

If you watched ESPN over the weekend, you might have caught some of their week-late broadcasting of the BASSMaster Classic.  Yes, the tournament actually happened a week ago, but ESPN chooses to bury it for a week.  In other words, if you really care, you know all about it before it hits ESPN.  Whatever.  B.A.S.S. also has decided to hold their “super bowl” to begin the season now, and that pretty much means they will always fish some southern water …
