Commissioners to consider 2021 bighorn sheep season

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will consider a staff recommendation to authorize one lottery and one auction permit for the 2021 bighorn sheep season when it meets Aug. 28 at Eugene T. Limited lodge stays return to Mahoney, Fort Robinson state parks July 30

LINCOLN, Neb. – Limited overnight lodging at Eugene T. Mahoney State Park’s Peter Kiewit Lodge and the Fort Robinson State Park Lodge will return July 30. This is part of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s continuing effort to restore park opportunities and amenities while protecting the public and staff from the spread of COVID-19. Prescribed fires planned at Mahoney State Park

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will be conducting prescribed fires at Eugene T. Mahoney State Park near Ashland starting Feb. 27. These fires are part of an ongoing prairie and oak woodland restoration project and will help control the spread of invasive plants. Exact dates of the fires will depend on weather. Affected trails and roads in portions of the park will be marked with signs and closed during the fires.

LINCOLN, Neb. – Rainbow trout will be stocked in Lincoln, Omaha and Eugene T. Mahoney State Park waters this month to provide excellent fishing opportunities this winter. Trout are scheduled to be stocked at Lincoln’s Holmes Lake and Bowling Lake (south pond) and Mahoney’s CenturyLink Lake on Dec. 12 and 13, and then at Omaha’s Standing Bear Lake on Dec. 16 and 17. LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is offering special antlerless deer hunting opportunities within Eugene T. Mahoney and Platte River State Parks (SP), as well as Schramm Park State Recreation Area (SRA). Successful applicants will be issued a special access permit that allows them to hunt antlerless deer in designated areas of a park on certain dates, using specific equipment. Tower at Mahoney State Park to close temporarily

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Walter Scott Jr. Observation Tower and surrounding trails at Eugene T. Mahoney State Park will be closed temporarily due to construction starting Oct. 1. The temporary closure will accommodate the painting of the tower and Riverview Event Center construction, a Venture Parks project scheduled for completion in the fall of 2020. Ash trees to be treated for EAB at Mahoney SP

LINCOLN, Neb. – With the assistance of a trusted partner, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will begin treating ash trees at Eugene T. Mahoney State Park this month to minimize potential damage of the emerald ash borer (EAB). EAB was detected at Lakeside Campground in June 2018, with no further sightings at Mahoney or other state parks since then. Eugene T. Mahoney SP Activity Center to close temporarily

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Activity Center at Eugene T. Mahoney State Park (SP), which houses the park’s indoor playground, will be closed April 22-26 as new carpet is installed. The playground will reopen April 27. The adjacent rock climbing facility, Venture Climb, will remain open. During this time, park guests may use the outdoor playground at Schramm Park State Recreation Area. A park entry permit is required of each vehicle entering a state park.
