My Kind of Weather

When you grow up in Western Nebraska and move east, you never really get used to the heat and humidity, you just learn to live with it. And you learn that when the temperatures turn unseasonably cool in July or August, you get out and enjoy them. I did just that last weekend, taking advantage of gorgeous weather to photograph two stories: one on Wagon Train Lake and one on tanking, with this stop on the Elkhorn River. Not only …

Gorgeous, Cool Morning Fishing The Elkhorn

I enjoyed a gorgeous, cool morning fishing in Nebraska’s Elkhorn River and backwater areas with a couple young family members of mine as well as a young family friend. I’d highly encourage you and your family to take advantage of Nebraska’s nice, cool summer weather while we have it by goin’ out and doin’ a little fishin’! You don’t need fancy stuff, we used simple tackle and nightcrawlers. Don’t forget your fishin’ permits for those 16 and older! Have fun, …

River Monsters, Turtle Man and The Storm

You know from the title of this blog that it’s gonna be CRAAA-ZY  BA-BY! But then, you know me, and you know it will be crazy! Yesterday was a wild day for me an a buddy to catch-and-release fish the Elkhorn River northwest of Gretna (my hometown) in Sarpy County, NE. It started out to be a decent day for wettin’ lines – warm, humid, barometric pressure droppin’,  partly to mostly  cloudy. A pretty morning early morning period. And yes, …

Find out what it’s like to take a livestock tank float trip down the Elkhorn River just outside of Omaha on Saturday’s (tomorrow’s) Great Outdoor Radio Show I host. Here’s some pics of me and a couple friends tanking down the Elkhorn (Jill Evers is waving at you, Caitlin Roth is wearing the big sunglasses, and I, of course, have been relegated to paddling, HA!). Went Fishin’

Today, the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend 2013, members of the Wagner Family who were available to go fishing – went. We sure had a great time! We fished the waters of  the Elkhorn River as well as an Elkhorn River oxbow pond in western Sarpy County, NE that a buddy of mine owns. Thanks Mark! The oxbow pond looked like a picturesque postcard this afternoon. The river was beautiful as well. One of my objectives was to take my …

Fine Day Yesterday on the Corne de Cerf

With yet another cold, wet weather pattern upon us here in the Heartland, I thought I’d share with you what a fine day it was yesterday on the river French Fur Trappers called Corne de Cerf, French for the horn of the elk, because of its meandering nature and tributaries. It was a nice spring day indeed to be on the Elkhorn! My buddy and I weren’t the only living, breathing things on the river this last Tuesday afternoon in April …

See Spring Waterfowl Migration near Metro Area

If you live in or around the Omaha-metro area, you don’t have to travel very far to experience the spring migration of waterfowl. I took these shots today along the Elkhorn and Platte Rivers in western Douglas and Sarpy Counties. The rivers were busy places with ducks and geese here and there! I caught the tail end of a bald eagle that was pursuing waterfowl, too! Here is a broad shot of the eagle in pursuit-mode after some flocks of …

THE FISH CARS

My job at Game and Parks is always interesting and everyday is a learning experience (even with my 34 years of knowledge, HA!). Below is an example of that. Recently, I was forwarded an inquiry about a postcard a gentleman had come across of a train car with the name Nebraska Game and Fish Commission on it. I knew from working at the Ak-sar-ben Aquarium fisheries facility near Gretna many moons ago that this was indeed a fish car. Interestingly, …
