A Well-Deserved Honor!

One of the most enjoyable things I get to do in my job is meet a lot of outstanding anglers and outstanding people.  One that I originally crossed paths many years ago is Teeg Stouffer, the founder of an organization called Recycled Fish, http://www.recycledfish.org/index.htm .  Teeg is one of those folks who seems to have boundless energy and enthusiasm, you know the kind of guy who has caffeine coursing through his veins.  His energy and passion is infectious and you …

Went Fishin’

Today, the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend 2013, members of the Wagner Family who were available to go fishing – went. We sure had a great time! We fished the waters of  the Elkhorn River as well as an Elkhorn River oxbow pond in western Sarpy County, NE that a buddy of mine owns. Thanks Mark! The oxbow pond looked like a picturesque postcard this afternoon. The river was beautiful as well. One of my objectives was to take my …

Commissioners Approve Big Game Regulations

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commissioners approved 2013 big game hunting regulations at their meeting May 24 in Chadron. The regulations represent a significant reduction of antlerless deer bonus tags in an effort to lower harvest. That reduction in permits reflects a white-tailed deer population that was depleted by a major outbreak of epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) in 2012. A summary of the 2013 big game changes: Deer — Remove 30,300 antlerless bonus tags from November Firearm …

Midland Musings with Jenny Nguyen – Capturing Moments Through Instagram

When it comes to Instagram, there are two camps: those who absolutely love it and those who hate it. A lot of hardcore photographers will grumble and gripe, criticizing the application and its users because it’s not “real photography.” And they’re right. Instagram is NOT photography. It requires very little technical know-how that real photographers who use real cameras spend years to perfect. Unless if you actually know how to work a real camera, I would advise Instagram users to …

In the Field with Jeff Kurrus – The Blind and Not So Blind

Do you know what you’re looking at below? A one-eyed channel catfish whose eye looks to be completely healed. They sure are tough suckers. How tough? “Just Fishing”

The “theme” of our current “Go Fishing” promotion, http://outdoornebraska.ne.gov/gofishing/ , is “It’s never JUST fishing”.  Maybe next week I will blog more about how we came up with that theme and what it means to us.  That theme reminded me of this song by Trace Adkins: I like a variety of music including some “Country/Western”, but I have to tell you what I hate about some Country/Western songs–they choke me up.  I have a daughter, have spent as much …

Camp Coffee

Time to camp.  For me spring turkey hunting and fishing are the excuses I have given already this year for spending time around the campfire with friends and family at some of our state parks and recreation areas.  During these early season trips the aromas of camp are a simple pleasure that add to the experience.  The smell of a warm campfire at night, the bouquet of hearty meals being cooked and the deep nasal therapy of camp coffee brewing …
