Taking Trophy Angling to the Bank

I do not own a boat, that is unless you want to count my float tube or “belly boat”.  Yes, I have a life-long dream of owning a boat, but I figured out a long time ago that a person can catch a lot of fish, and a lot of really big fish, from Nebraska waters without a boat.  I have even suggested in the past that in some fishing situations I can flat out out-fish boat anglers (The View …

Fly Fishing School

If you are interested in learning to fly-fish, and do not be intimidated, it is not that hard to learn, I found this on the calendar for this coming Saturday, June 14. That is being held at our Ak-Sar-Ben Aquarium, directions are included and a little map to let you know where it is located.  Class size is limited, there are a few spots still open, so be sure to call ahead and reserve yours.  The Cornhusker Fly Fishers are …

Old Lenses

Looking closely at photography blogs on the internet, there seems to be a quiet but growing realization that film and digital cameras may come and go as the technology rapidly changes, but good lenses can stand the test of time. All photographers should take note of this. Even the least expensive interchangeable lens digital cameras available today often use that same brand’s pre-digital lenses. Perhaps surprising, many older film camera lenses are available on the used market at reasonable prices …

Robinson Reports: Ups and Downs

This past weekend was really described by the title above, and for once I’m not describing the weather. Speaking of the weather, it absolutely impacted our plan. My buddy Steve and I fished a walleye tournament at Elwood Reservoir this past Sunday, and saying it was brutal is a real understatement. The water temp the previous week had been all the way up to 60, but when the 30 degree nights came along during the week, the water dropped all the …

Last Call for Morels

After a morel mushroom hunting adventure with a buddy along the Elkhorn River this weekend, I am issuing a final call for harvesting morel mushrooms, at least in the river bottom woodlands here in eastern Nebraska. Head to your woods for morels as soon as you can! They’re there, most likely in good numbers due to the heavy rain event we had this past Sunday. We did find fresh morels. However, some were dry and had brown tops to them. Fungi/mushroom expert Mark Davis, Writer/Photojournalist for the …

Robinson Reports: Over the Hump

It finally seems that the cold wintery weather has disappeared. Since we’re well into a late spring, my biggest fear is that it’ll turn into a hot summer in a very short amount of time, which would leave some windows open for a short time to catch specific fish at specific times. Right now, we’re taking what we can get. Water temps across the central Nebraska region have slowly been rising, only to be pushed back down at times by …

Spring Wipers

You all know I am a huge fan of In-Fisherman and all of their products.  Their system for catching fish flat out applies to every water you fish, everywhere–including Nebraska!  As a matter of fact, their editors/writers have fished Nebraska waters, many times.  Most recently, you need to watch this segment from their TV show; it was filmed on Lake McConaughy and it will apply to wiper fishing anywhere you fish!  Follow this link to watch it, McConaughy wipers .

Those Pesky Jakes

Now I know there is a large contingency of turkey chasers that feel a turkey is a turkey and will readily take a jake with ill effect to their psychy. Understand I have nothing against them. I like jakes. Heck, my dog is named Jake. But true to their upbringing, jakes can screw up a hunt like nobody’s business. Jakes are like a gange of teenagers. Young adolescent birds that hang out together. By themselves they are not much threat …
