Time for Tick Talk

EEEEK! TICK! The ticks are out! In Nebraska, ticks become active early in the spring and are one of the first biting pests we experience as the weather warms. Ticks are part of Nebraska’s environment, and they shouldn’t stop any of us from pursuing our favorite outdoor activities this time of year — wild turkey hunting, morel mushroom picking, bird watching, tent camping, hiking, fishing, etc. We just need to take the necessary precautions to dissuade these little buggers from crawling on us, embedding …

Take Care of your Auger, and Your Auger Will Take Care of You!

Isom Bauer 002

Even the most hard core of us ice-anglers are now resigned to the fact that it is going to be a few months until we are on the ice again.  Yes, I go through a period of depression every year when the ice melts.  In short order, I pick up the open-water rods and reels and “get back on the horse”, but I still am counting the days until we again have ice! So, I know many of you reading …

If you have caught more than one fish in your life, you have probably hooked and lost one, probably hooked and lost a big one.  We have all been there.  It hurts, I know. I found another blog that had a great post about losing a fish, The 7 Extremely Sad Stages of Losing a Fish.  Follow the link, read it, it will not take you long and it will make you smile. It is Spring, and Spawning is in the Air, Well, Maybe in the Water Anyhow

DSCN5627

Spring is upon us, no doubt about that.  We will have some schizophrenic “ups” and “downs” in temperatures yet, we do every spring, but there is no doubt that it is here.  This is the time of year that many anglers get “spring fever” and hurry to get on the water.  On a warm afternoon, who can resist? You will hear a lot of talk among anglers about spawning activities of a variety of fish this time of year.  Some …

Home Made Bowfishing Kit

How to make a home made bowfishing kit: Step 1: Find an old bow you wouldn’t mind using as your ‘fishing bow’. Step 2: Either buy a bowfishing arrow or make your own bowfishing arrow. Step 2.1: To make your own bow fishing arrow, I would recommend selecting an aluminum arrow to avoid carbon splinters as the slide lock slides up and down the shaft of the arrow. Step 2.2: Make a slide lock with a washer that fits comfortably …

TV Fishing Shows

DSCN6126

I have not posted any videos from “KVD” and the Mystery Tackle Box recently.  This is a good one! I love watching fishing shows on TV, video and the internet as much as the next guy, but take Karl’s advice, you cannot catch anything sitting at home on the couch!  GO FISH! And, if you want to take him up on the Mystery Tackle Box offer, that is a great way to try some new baits and presentations and expand …

Wattles & Snoods – Turkeys Introduce Kids to Hunting

If I had to pick the perfect critter for introducing kids to the incredible pastime of hunting, it would be the wild turkey. They are interesting, challenging and so many of the activities associated with hunting turkeys fit right into a kid’s idea of a good time, like painting your face, hanging out in a fort (blind), saying silly words and making funny noises. I think it’s safe to say, turkeys are just plain fun! Kids love to repeat words …

Creating and Maintaining the Tradition of Hunting

Our traditions are a major part of us. They help to shape who we are. Indeed, when it comes to the hunting lifestyle, they are at the very core of what we are. The wild places, the game animals and birds we seek, how we do that, when we do that, and with whom we do that, all sculpt our outdoor lives. Whenever I think about creating a new hunting tradition I always find myself in kind of a quandary. The word tradition really isn’t about the new, it’s about the old, isn’t it? Or, …
