Adventure Report, Close to Home

You all know that I love to travel Nebraska, fish the variety of waters we have, catch a variety of species of fish, and share that here on my blog.  I will continue to do that every chance I get.  However, life is usually a lot more routine than that.  I am not always traveling, am not always able to get away to one of the several waters I wish I could be fishing at the time.  No, just like …

Canoe the Niobrara on WOWT 6

Grab a life jacket and hop aboard, we’re gonna canoe the spring-fed waters of the gorgeous Niobrara River east of Valentine, NE this week on my WOWT 6 News Weekly Outdoor Report. I’ll talk about and show you why a summer float trip on this Nebraska water trail through an outfitter should be on everyone’s bucket list! Weekday trips are strongly suggested to avoid a lot of other water traffic on this scenic river. The ecologically unique Niobrara River valley is also home to the …

Promoting Pollinator Habitat Week

“Pollination is one of the most important mechanisms in the maintenance and promotion of biodiversity and, in general, life on Earth. Pollination benefits society by increasing food, security and improving livelihoods.” – Convention on Biological Diversity, Sustaining Life on Earth.   We are in the midst of National Pollinator Habitat Week (June 15-21) here in Nebraska and elsewhere in this great country. I am promoting it and proud to say that our family farm in southeastern Nebraska is enrolled entirely …

Carp-O-Rama 2015

It is that time of year again!  Our annual “carp-o-rama” events are just around the corner.  These events have been very popular, and you will not want to miss them this summer (see the highlighted yellow boxes on the following brochure). Becoming an Outdoors Woman Empowers Women

The Becoming an Outdoors Woman (BOW) program in Nebraska continues to grow and empower women. Nebraska was the second state to embrace this outdoor program started by Dr. Christine Thomas from Wisconsin in 1991. Thomas had a mission to give women the knowledge to be active in the outdoors and through the BOW program women gain the confidence needed to engage in all types of outdoor activities. The BOW program has grown not only in Nebraska and Wisconsin but is …

Visit Mulberry Lane

Gosh, I love to pick and eat mulberries. C’mon, who doesn’t, right? I guess it’s the Nebraska kid in me (and many of us) who like to do that! Growing up on the western edge of Gretna, NE, my buddies and I would hike the nearby woods and seek out those mulberry trees with their ripe, sweet, dark purple fruit from mid June to early July. I fondly recall the days of having purple feet, hands, lips and tongue. What a blast it was (and still is) to take …

Bed Time for ‘Gill

I have pursued, and caught, some of the biggest, baddest fish that swim Nebraska waters.  Spending hours, even days fishing hard with little to show for it knowing that the one fish I might catch could be huge is not a problem–love fishing like that every chance I get.  But, I also love a little more action and a return to my roots, the same roots most of us anglers share, sitting on a shoreline dabbling bobbers and baits in …

A Season of Firsts

I’ve always said the outdoor world presents many different twists and turns, and that’s what makes it so intriguing! I compare entering the outdoor world anytime to going out on that first date: You’re excited, you’re nervous, you’re not wanting to forget anything, you’re probably overdressed and you’re wondering what eventualities might take place. But, I think spending as much time as possible in the field and trying new things improves your overall outdoor knowledge and skill level. In my mind, you’re able …
