And He Can Play Guitar Too!

eric-700x525-96a7644e-8325-4bea-91d8-a3ffd04deea9

I heard a radio talk show driving to work this week that brought this story to my attention.  Of course they had not a clue about the fish or fishing, so I looked into it more and found that this is really cool! This comes from Men’s Journal online: Eric Clapton Just Caught the Year’s Biggest Salmon in Iceland Rock & roll legend. World-class guitarist. Record-setting angler? Turns out that Eric Clapton, one of the greatest musicians of all time, …

Here’s Your Sign

American dagger moth caterpillar

Sometimes nature is pretty obvious with its signs about what a person shouldn’t touch. Cacti, yucca plants, porcupines and rattlesnakes, for instance, have signals akin to a flashing billboard. Then there are more devious dangers such as poky thorns on beautiful rose bushes and rash-inducing urushiol on unassuming poison ivy plants. I’m not sure where the subject of the following story fits into that spectrum, but I’ve become convinced I should have been paying a little closer attention to some …

Fifty Shades of Flathead

DSCN1162

OK, you have to understand that biologists tend to think about things a little bit differently, maybe even a little bit warped.  Subjects and discussions that may be uncomfortable or turn the stomachs of some can be lunch break conversations for biologists.  For example, we tend to be fascinated by the mating habits of this species or that species–it is how the species is perpetuated, how life continues.  I have something interesting about fish mating habits to share in this blog post …

13882373_1159621950778195_6121185372216525328_n

If you need it, there are all kinds of books, videos, and speakers available today to help you get motivated.  Motivated to do what?  I do not know, I guess motivated to do whatever you want to do, whoever you want to be. I want to catch big fish. Nothing motivates me more than some pictures or better yet, videos. . . . I know these videos have been present on the internet for at least a few days already, …

When Nature Calls…

As you plan your next hike, camping trip, biking excursion, hunt, fishing trip or any outdoor adventure, think to yourself, are you fully prepared for that moment when nature calls?  Yes, we have all experienced that “OH NO” moment in the outdoors.  One time forgetting to pack the ever important toilet paper, you will never forget it again.  While toilet paper is such an important commodity, it can be so finicky in the outdoor climate.  I have discovered many ways …

Anglers should …

Birds Turn the Tables

green-heron2n

I set you up last Friday by posting a video that showed Wels Catfish in Europe snatching pigeons off of river sandbars, and I postulated that our beautifully ugly Flathead Catfish might do the same thing (It’s A Fish Eat Pigeon World). This Friday, the birds turn the tables! I am NOT a bird biologist, and I am not sure where that video was taken.  I do know that is some type of small Heron, I am pretty sure a Green …

Quick Report on Hot July Adventures

IMG_0164

I have been “out and about” on a couple of trips in the past few weeks.  Those trips were for events where my attendance was requested.  Pretty much everywhere I go, all the time, the fishing gear goes with me and I work in at least a little time for myself on the water.  Yes, that is my job too, but it is also who I am!  It has always been that way. In an earlier blog post I mentioned how …
