Barbs and Backlashes

It’s Still On!

I know most of you will think I am crazy, but I am still on the water.  This past week has been nice and knowing this might be “the last hurrah” for my open-water fishing for the year, I have been taking advantage of every nice afternoon that I can.  Yes, I know hunting seasons are in full swing, and I will be doing that too; I also might get around to setting some steel again this fall/early winter.  But, …

SAM

By now I am guessing those of you who frequently read my blog have noticed some changes.  Our “IT” folks here at the Nebraska Game & Parks Commission are updating some things and trying to make everything more user-friendly and inviting to a wide range of folks.  Nebraska’s great outdoor resources can be enjoyed by everyone. They are still working on RSS feeds for the “new” blogs, but I believe you will be able to sign up for the RSS …

Cornhusker Fly Fishers

I want to take another opportunity to give a “shout out” to another Nebraska fishing organization.  I love the opportunities I have to interact with the different fishing groups/clubs in Nebraska .  The folks involved in those organizations are serious enough about their fishing that they join together with other anglers and then do a lot of things that benefit the sport of fishing and our state’s fisheries resources.  Besides that they are hard-core anglers and whenever I get together …

“Big, Big Weekend Up Here at the Lodge. . . “

It is Friday and for many of you I suspect I will not have to tell you to get outside and enjoy Nebraska’s great outdoors this weekend. Tomorrow is our rifle deer opener and it is a “Big, Big Weekend Up Here at the Lodge. . . “ For those of you heading out deer hunting, I do not condone the boorish behavior, drinking, bad manners and poor judgement recited in this video, but here are some big bucks to …

Growing Up Jenny Newman

Earlier this fall my daughter celebrated her sixteenth birthday.  Yes, I realize that is a big one.  No, she does not have her driver’s license yet.  We are still working on that, there is no hurry.  No, we did not throw some outlandish, too-expensive birthday bash. We went fishing. Yes, we go fishing for all kinds of reasons, do not even need a special occasion, but this trip was on purpose and there was a special reason.  We went over …

Got Another One!

Just a couple of weeks ago I told you about successfully completing my quest to catch a tagged flathead catfish from Branched Oak Reservoir (Finally Got One!).  Well, as the fall has progressed and waters have cooled, I have shifted my focus from warm-water species like flathead catfish to species that will continue to be more active, and easier to catch, in cooler water.  I have made several trips up to Lake Wanahoo the past few weeks and have consistently …

Youth Fishing Instructor Newsletter, Summer Fall 2013

I have had this newsletter for a couple of months now; have either forgotten or not had the space to mention it before now.  Sorry. If you want, if you want to follow any of the links, here is the .pdf document, SummerFall 2013 Newsletter . Our Youth Fishing Instructors are a huge asset!  Here is an event a number of them pitched-in on this past weekend, Cops and Bobbers , Omaha World-Herald, “Cops and Bobbers”. THANK YOU!  If you …

Fear the Beard

Halloween was yesterday.  I saw a lot of ridiculousness from young and old.  From what I observed, costumes imitating the cast from Duck Dynasty were some of the most popular this year. Most folks had to slap some goofy-looking fake beard on their faces to imitate Willie, Jase, Phil, or good ole Uncle Si. Any respectable baseball fan knows that the Boston Red Sox just won the World Series this week.  Beards that the Red Sox players had grown for …

State Record Update, October 2013

A few more state record applications have piled up on my desk, most from the summer months, but one from this fall.  Let me tell you about them. . . . Rod & Reel The first one I want to tell you about is a creek chub that was caught by 9-year old Hunter Pitt of Hastings.  Hunter caught an 11 ounce, 12 inch creek chub from a drainage ditch in Dodge County on the 5th of July.  You can …

Digital NEBRASKAland, November 2013

I mentioned last month that for the first time NEBRASKAland magazine was available in a digital format, “Check out the Digital NEBRASKAland”.  The November issue is now available digitally, NEBRASKAland, November 2013. Once again I have a somewhat selfish reason for bringing this to attention in my blog.  If you check out the November issue, you will find an excellent story by Jenny Nguyen, pages 23-28, about raising and stocking trout in Nebraska waters. I discovered something else in that …
