I have stated before that THE issue of this century for western states including Nebraska will be water–who gets to use it, and how much is left for fish & wildlife and outdoor recreation. Once again let me post a little reminder that ran on the news last week, Farmers Voice Concerns at Water Limit Hearing in York. Take a minute and watch the video, read through the article.
Now if you took the time to read and listen, let me wonder if anything was said about water in rivers and streams in that area? Headwater streams of the Big Blue River originate within the borders of the Upper Big Blue Natural Resource District, do you suppose groundwater use in that district has any impact on river and stream flows? Why was it ever called the Big “Blue” River? Folks are already seeing impacts of groundwater development on their home wells, how about the rivers and streams? Do fish & wildlife survive on 5-year averages? How much water is there for fish & wildlife and outdoor recreation in that district? Could they use more? Or less?
Think about it.
