Digital NEBRASKAland December 2013

I want to give another “shout out” to our NEBRASKAland magazine being available in a digital form, on-line, now.  Make sure to check out the December issue.  Of course you know I am going to mention the fish and fishing subjects you can find in that issue, especially Jeff Kurrus’ article on ice-fishing for crappies on pages 30 and 31.

There is also a good story in there on predator calling, and I think it is a real treat to have a story by famous Nebraska folklorist, Roger Welsch, near the back of every issue.  In this issue Roger talks about sausage and in that story mentions one of my favorite butchers, Stoysich House of Sausage.

I mentioned ice fishing here, and with recent weather conditions let me remind everyone to be patient, wait for it.  I will be on the ice as soon as it is safe, and will stay on it in the late winter/early spring as long as it is safe.  I realize that we have had weather cold enough to put an ice-cap on some of the smaller bodies of water in Nebraska, but that is about it–a cap.  Once there is a cap, it needs to be at least 3 and preferably 4 inches thick before it is safe, and it takes even colder temperatures to make that cap of ice thicken.  I said all of that to say, be darned careful; likely we are still days if not a couple of weeks from having safe ice on most waters in Nebraska.

I can neither confirm nor deny that I caught crappies through the ice last winter. . . .
