Parts of Wagon Train SRA Closed for Cleanup Following Storm

LINCOLN, Neb. – Wind damage from an overnight storm has forced the temporary closure of parts of Wagon Train State Recreation Area (SRA) in Lancaster County. No one was injured.

Access to Areas 1 and 3, including the boat ramp at Area 3, is closed until further notice while crews clean up debris and downed trees from the Thursday night storm. Area 1 is located on the west side of the lake and Area 3 is on the east side.

The SRA located 2 miles east of Hickman suffered heavy damage to trees. In addition, two campers, three restrooms and one picnic shelter were destroyed.

Area 2, located just across a bay to the south of Area 3, is the SRA’s main campground. That area was not damaged and remains open. It has 22 camping sites with electricity and a fishing dock.

“Safety of our park guests is important to Nebraska Game and Parks,” said Roger Kuhn, parks administrator. “We will evaluate the damage and take action to make sure that these areas are safe before we reopen them.”
