LINCOLN – Ordinary people become “citizen scientists” during a BioBlitz walk, four of which are being held for the first time in Nebraska this May. During a BioBlitz event, participants find and identify as many species of plants, animals, fungi, and other organisms as possible in a specific area. Plans Being Finalized for Road Repair at Niobrara State Park

LINCOLN – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and the Nebraska Department of Roads are finalizing plans for repairs to the asphalt roads within Niobrara State Park (SP). An asphalt overlay of the entire park road system – approximately 7¾ miles – is proposed. Road conditions within the park have deteriorated, and park officials have identified a road rehabilitation project as a top priority. Outdoor Educational Rendezvous Set for May 8 at Niobrara State Park

LINCOLN – Northeast Nebraska’s Niobrara State Park will become an outdoor classroom May 8 at the fourth annual Outdoor Educational Rendezvous at Niobrara State Park. From 10 a.m.-2 p.m., school students, teachers, home-school families, parents and guardians will get an outdoor education from 40 master naturalist programs and activities such as fishing, archery, tomahawk throwing, Native American culture, mountain man programs, horseback riding, taxidermy and raptor release. Four Missouri River Boat Ramps Temporarily Inaccessible

LINCOLN – Missouri River boat ramps at Bazile Creek, Niobrara, Verdel and Sunshine Bottom are temporarily inaccessible because of the lowering of the river by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Missouri River between the Fort Randall Dam in South Dakota and Gavins Point Dam was lowered June 18 to accommodate flood waters accumulating down the river. Volunteers Needed for Verdel Missouri River Cleanup

LINCOLN, Neb. – Volunteers are needed for the inaugural Verdel Missouri River Cleanup on Saturday, Oct. 5. The cleanup will comb sandbars and islands for trash along a 39-mile stretch of the river. The Missouri National Recreational River and Niobrara State Park (SP) are sponsoring the event, which begins with registration at 8 a.m. at the Verdel boat ramp and ends at noon with a cookout for volunteers.
