A Look Back, 2014

I guess as we come to the close of another year on the calendar it is natural to take a look back.  For me there was a tremendous amount that happened in 2014, some good, some bad, with family, fins, feathers, and fur running through all of it.  Let me share a few reflections, show some pictures, tell you what I will remember about 2014. In my mind, I start a “new year” on the first day I get on …

Snow Birds

With snow in the forecast last night, and looking to escape the indoor office thing, I snuck in a quick bird hunt this morning.  This was the first halfway decent snow in my hunting area since I was sidetracked by the November rifle deer season.  And as most bird hunters know a new snow on a landscape where there wasn’t any before is a wonderful thing (First Snow). With a chill in the air and snow underfoot, Carrot, my diminutive …

Hunting Nebraska’s Reservoirs

Big water reservoirs are often hunted by Nebraska Game and Parks commissioner Lynn Berggren along with family and friends. Commissioners Berggren, Jerrod Burke and Norris Marshall along with Burke’s son Logan, and Berggren’s sons Kevin and Pat and grandson Kaleb were all out waterfowl hunting this past month – making lasting memories and enjoying morning sunrises. Part of hunting is spending time with family and friends, chasing sunrises and sunsets and enjoying time spent together in the field or on …

Sunset Deer

I am going to steal a photo from my nephew’s FaceBook page for this Friday’s blog post.  He got this on one of his trail cameras recently: Obviously it was purely fortuitous that he got that picture, but you can get some really amazing pictures with trail cameras.  Professional wildlife photographers use them too; they may be a little more sophisticated than the versions used by avid deer hunters, but the technology is the same. Yes, trail cams allow us to …

A Western Nebraska Hunt for a Westerner

CRAWFORD – In order to find success, one hunter this week made the 430-mile journey from Western, Nebraska, to Western Nebraska. Yes, you read that right. Johnny Barta, a big game hunter from Western, Nebraska (the village near Fairbury, not the region), visited the butte country of western Nebraska (the region, not the village) to fill the state’s lone bighorn sheep tag. His hunt ended successfully at noon Tuesday, Dec. 9, when he bagged a trophy ram at Fort Robinson …
