Deep Water Mortality

I am going deep with this blog post, no pun intended.  Have to start with a story. . . . Several years back on a late October day, I spent some time fishing Elwood Reservoir with the maintenance man from our headquarters facilities (yes, even our maintenance men hunt and fish!).  We found some baitfish in deep water, in fact I will never forget watching the depth-finder, jigging a Rattle Snakie in 51 feet of water, when I hooked a really nice fish–ended up …

November. Too much to do?

Welcome to November and all it has to offer in its short 30-day span.  For the hunter the toughest part may be choosing just what to chase next. The migration is on and all parts of Nebraska’s duck zones are currently open. There are a good number of local Canada geese around the state and there will be more added as it cools down further north. Bird season is open and you can pursue grouse, chickens, pheasant and quail.  (and …

Capturing Cool Moments

“To photograph is to hold one’s breath, when all faculties converge to capture fleeting reality. It’s at that precise moment that mastering an image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy.” ~Henri Cartier-Bresson I have seen many cool things when I’ve been outdoors here in Nebraska, especially hunting. I just love being in the field! Years ago though, I never, ever packed a camera on my outdoor adventures. I know, I know, shame on me! But, now I bring a camera on every one of my outdoor expeditions. …

Fall Fat Flatties

Over the past few years I have blogged several times about some of the research being done on Branched Oak flathead catfish; for example, Some Field Work, 71.6 On Your Radio Dial–All Flatheads All the Time!, Branched Oak Flatheads.  A large part of that research has been the tagging of flathead catfish in Branched Oak Reservoir; over 1500 flathead catfish in Branched Oak are swimming around with tags on them. About this time last year I was lamenting that even …

Let the Bird Season Begin

As I pointed out in a 2012 Blog,  tomorrow (10/25) marks the beginning of a new year for many upland bird hunters.  And according to the 2014 Upland Game Outlook we can expect to do a bit better than last year, especially with quail.  I hope this an upward trend that continues for some time – suitable habitat and weather being the limiting factors – and know I am not alone. I am a bird hunter, with a slight bias …

Rewarding!

Let me give you an update on some of what I have been up to lately. . . . I was once again honored to participate in our annual Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BO-W) workshop held at the 4-H camp in Halsey.  I was the instructor for our basic fishing and bow-fishing classes and one of the instructors for our on-pond fishing session.  Let me give you an idea of my schedule for that weekend, what I did, and show some pictures. …

An Old Coot Trick

It happens just about every year.  The ducks that are around have been around for a while and they seem to have it all figured out.  They not only avoid your decoys, many disappear during shooting hours and those that stick around land on the wrong side of the pond. Some call it the October Lull.  But all of us wildfowlers grumble bad words as we watch our lonely dekes bobbing in the water. We try our best to derive …
