It Ain’t Over, ‘Til Its Over

A couple of weeks ago I figured my ice-fishing was done for this season.  But then our weather swung back to cold, again, and last week I had some business out west.  I debated whether to take the ice-fishing gear with me or the open-water gear.  I took both.  The first afternoon I planned to do some scouting, check out the conditions and see what I could do.  I was a little surprised when I pulled onto the Valentine National …

Panhandle Passages with Justin Haag – Hail to the Mighty Spud Bar

I have a lot of ice fishing gear. I’ll admit it, I’m a junkie. Too many hours have been spent perusing catalogs and the Internet for the latest and greatest tools to get fish from one side of the ice to the other. Whether my purchases have resulted in more success can be debated. If I had to name the most valuable piece of equipment in my arsenal, it wouldn’t be the portable shanty, gas drill or electronic fishfinder that …

Nebraska Ice-fari

At no time this winter have I have been completely convinced that we were going to have a long ice-fishing season.  Yes, we have had some cold weather, have had plenty of ice to be safe, but then we have these bouts of warm temperatures.  It has been cold in between thaws, but not cold enough for long enough.  Since I have not been convinced it will last long, the past couple of weeks I have been on the ice …

Staring at the screen

Once again I am going to say something that makes me sound really old:  I have been thinking while on the ice the past couple of weeks that I have been watching a depth-finder dial while ice-fishing for over 20 years now.  Let me tell you that we caught a darned lot of fish through the ice before the fancy depth-finder gadgets were adapted for ice-fishing, and you can still catch fish through the ice without a depth-finder.  But, if …

Mahoney Ice Fishing Clinic

Last weekend we hosted an ice-fishing clinic on the Century Link Pond at Mahoney State Park, http://outdoornebraska.ne.gov/parks/guides/parksearch/showpark.asp?Area_No=273 .  I did not publicize this event ahead of time because we had as many folks as we could handle sign up for it.  We had a great turn out and a great time, let me share some photos. Here is everyone spread out fishing: We had a variety of ice-fishing equipment and talked to folks about all of it and how it …

Adventure Report, New Year’s Break

My family and I got out of town for an extended time over the New Year’s holiday.  We went “out west” to celebrate Christmas with family, and as I promised before we left, we spent as much time as possible enjoying Nebraska’s great outdoors!  Time to give you a report. . . . I have listened to plenty of negativity and complaining about pheasant numbers and pheasant hunting this year.  Believe me, I know there are not the number of …
