Public asked to report dead, sick big game

LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska wildlife officials say conditions throughout much of the state are suitable for the spread of deadly viral diseases among big game populations and are asking the public to report unexplained death or illnesses of deer, pronghorn, elk and bighorn sheep. Epizootic hemorrhagic disease, or EHD, often causes high fever, internal bleeding, swelling, lesions, lethargy, increased heart rate, dehydration, salivation, incoordination and loss of fear of humans. LINCOLN – Hunters are asked to report observations of sick or dead deer to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission as they head afield this September. Each summer, the Commission monitors for signs of diseased deer; reports from the public help track incidents. Deer populations in Nebraska have been healthy across most areas and last year’s harvest resulted in near-record numbers. Few cases of sick deer have been reported so far this year. Remember River Antlerless permits in southwest Nebraska

LINCOLN – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission wants to remind hunters about the River Antlerless permits that remain available. These $10 permits allow the harvest of 2 antlerless whitetail deer in the state’s river corridors on private lands. The permits are designed to help control deer populations in those areas where they are the highest and lead to landowner concerns.
