Firearm Deer Season Preview on WOWT 6 News

I’ll be previewing Nebraska’s popular firearm deer hunting season (which opens Saturday) on my WOWT 6 News outdoor segment.  I’ll be encouraging fellow hunters to be selective in the deer they harvest this season as populations in many areas of the state rebuild from disease losses related to the drought last year. I’ll  be tossing in a couple important hunting safety tips for the season as well. My Weekly Outdoor Report airs LIVE Thursday evening on the station’s  6 p.m. …

A Couple of Bucks

It’s nearly impossible for me, or any of NEBRASKAland’s staff, to go in the field on our own time and not photograph if the opportunity presents. The two bucks above are proof of that, as they were photographed on a recent deer archery hunt. In fact, the only way not to work is for us to leave our cameras at home. But why would we do that? There may be a photograph we need to take.

Measuring Time

For me and my spaniels there are two time designations in the fall – BN & PT.  We are currently in the BN or Before November time period.  The BN period is often characterized by the mostly carefree time one spends outdoors pursuing critters during the early hunting seasons.  These hunts are often rather relaxing affairs with the idea that many are a prelude to the bigger or better hunts yet to come.  Common examples of hunting at this time can …

Hire My Deer Processor

A few years ago while looking for a deer processor, I was referred to Todd Hanson in eastern Nebraska by some folks at the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. I called Todd and asked him one very important question: “Do you guarantee that I will get my deer back if I send it to you?” “Absolutely,” he replied, and we have had a wonderful relationship since. I mostly have him grind my shoulders and hind quarters, but he also has …
