Wanna Build a Fly Rod?

One of the beauties of the outdoor pursuits is that they are full of Do-It-Yourself opportunities.  I am betting most hard-core anglers at one time or another have fooled with making their own lures, sinkers, leaders, rods and more.  In some cases we start making our own not only because it is rewarding, but because it is better than what we can obtain off the shelves of the local sporting goods store.

If you have thought about building your own rod, or perhaps saving a little $$$ in the fly-fishing game, you might want to check this out:

Fly rod building class for beginners starts in January

Why purchase a new fly rod when you can fish one with the satisfaction of knowing you’ve built it yourself.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, in cooperation with Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing and the Cornhusker Fly Fishing Club, is sponsoring a fly rod building class for beginners this winter.

The class will be held seven consecutive Wednesdays at 6 p.m. Central time, starting Jan. 10, at the Turpin Outdoor Education Center in Lincoln.

The cost of the class is $35. The class will include basic tools needed to build a fly rod. Each participant also must purchase a rod building and finishing kit before beginning the class. The cost of the kits varies, but a quality kit can be purchased for about $75. Participants will be given instructions and guidance on the purchase of these kit after registering. Reading glasses are recommended. Attendance during all six sessions will be required to complete the fly rod.

To find out more, including the schedule and a link to registration, visit the calendar event entry at Calendar.OutdoorNebraska.gov.

The education center is located at 4703 N. 44th St.
