Things To Know When Coaching A New Hunter

One of the most amazing experiences in the hunting lifestyle is taking a new hunter to the field repetitively. I have mentored new hunters for some time and encourage any of you who hunt to join our cadre. Coaching apprentice hunters should start with our own family or friend networks, however, be on the lookout for aspiring hunters in all sorts of unexpected places. It is now vital to reach out to new and different audiences who are eager to …

Scott Frost On Hunting

Scott Frost has begun his second season as the head football coach at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, but did you know that he really enjoys hunting (and fishing)? Here are two interviews that I did with the Husker gridiron head coach late last winter for my WOWT 6 Sports Outdoor Report at a charity hunt for Teammates about his enjoyment of hunting and his perspectives about Nebraska’s  outdoor scene. It is fun hanging out and hunting with Scott Frost. By …

All They Need Is Access To Land

Everything is in place, isn’t it? Fully vetted, trained mentors/experienced bowhunters with transportation, check. Permission from parents or guardians for youth to participate, check. Young mentees who’ve successfully completed the Nebraska bowhunter education course and met the other requirements, check. The necessary equipment, check. Shooting proficiency on the target range, check. Wait, are we missing anything? Oh yeah, a place to go. Wait. What? A place to go. That is what is needed in the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s …

Creating and Maintaining the Tradition of Hunting

Our traditions are a major part of us. They help to shape who we are. Indeed, when it comes to the hunting lifestyle, they are at the very core of what we are. The wild places, the game animals and birds we seek, how we do that, when we do that, and with whom we do that, all sculpt our outdoor lives. Whenever I think about creating a new hunting tradition I always find myself in kind of a quandary. The word tradition really isn’t about the new, it’s about the old, isn’t it? Or, …

Firearm Deer Season: Enjoying the Experience, Making Memories

We are now just under one week away from the opening day of Nebraska’s largest hunt – the firearm deer hunting season. It opens this Saturday, November 15th. I can hardly wait! This is one of the absolute best times of year to be outside with the deer rut happening! My lovely wife Polly of 26 years says that everything comes to a grinding halt in the Wagner family with the opening of that deer season. It’s a wonderful tradition though. For many …

Youth Upland Game Bird Weekend on WOWT 6 Outdoors

On WOWT 6 Outdoors this week, I’ll be highlighting Nebraska’s two-day youth upland game bird hunting season that will be taking place this the weekend of October 18th & 19th. I’ll be mentioning a few public places not far from Omaha where we at Game and Parks will be releasing adult rooster pheasants for the kids and their mentors to hunt. As a reminder, my Weekly Outdoor Report airs LIVE on Omaha’s WOWT 6 News on Thursday at 6 p.m. CST during …

Kids, Turkeys and Tips

If you’re a seasoned, veteran turkey hunter like me, one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll find is to take a kid to the field for the spring season! No question! Be sure to check the regulations/requirements for youth turkey hunting here in Nebraska. You’ll note that there are no minimum age restrictions and that the youth turkey hunting permit price is only $5.00! Conservation Officer Rich Berggren of Waterloo, NE, myself, and many, many others at Game and Parks …

Goose Season Closes with Young Guns, Memories of Young Faces

I closed the Canada goose hunting season in Nebraska’s East Management Unit yesterday afternoon.  And, a fine afternoon hunting session it was despite the frigid temperatures! I was invited to hunt with top Canada goose calling ‘young guns’ Nick Bilava, Casey Eikmeier and Weston Cooper along with their highly-trained hunting dogs. It was an incredible experience hunting with the seasoned young fellas on their beautiful spread! Whenever you have the chance, hunt with the younger crowd, do it! Share what you know! …

Goose Hunting Highlights

I’ve been awfully busy on a number of different outdoor fronts as of late, but I wanted to share some quick highlights of Sunday’s Canada goose hunting adventure on Lost Island along the Platte River in Butler County, NE. Special thanks to landowner, conservationist, expert waterfowler and good friend Kyle Simpson who arranged the hunt with youth on his property which has outstanding waterfowl habitat! Thanks again, Kyle!  By the way, Kyle hates to have his picture taken, HA, gotcha anyway, Simpson! Here …

Neat Message from Colorado

I recently received the email message (and photos) below from Colorado and wanted to share it with all of you. Jane Gustafson, who heads our Game and Parks Marketing Section, says that the focus of agency advertising efforts is to get kids in the field hunting and to make Nebraska the place where they do this. She also says that many Nebraskans have family out-of-state and what a better way to encourage these folks to come back, visit and spend …
