10 Reasons to Hunt Turkeys in Nebraska this Spring!

Nebraska’s spring wild turkey hunting is tough to beat. It really is. Trust me, I know from firsthand experience! And, we Nebraskans as well as our nonresident visitors have plenty of reasons, ten at least, to take to the woods to call in a bearded bird this year.  1. All counties have turkeys. Wild turkeys thrive in all 93 Nebraska counties where there is suitable habitat. Interestingly, some counties in the state even rank within the top 10 counties in the nation for wild turkey abundance.  2. Variety of …

It’s All About the Gobble

It invokes such strong feelings of excitement that it escapes words. It is a crazy sound in nature, really, perhaps even a bit comical. The sound, denoting spring, is actually a loud, shrill, descending, throaty jumble of chords that lasts about 1-2 seconds. http://www.nwtf.org/_resources/dyn/files/1475676z54066659/_fn/Gobbling.mp3 For those of us who enjoy spring wild turkey hunting, the gobble of the male wild turkey is at its essence. A spring wild turkey hunt is about communicating, interacting and connecting with the North America’s largest …

Never Too Late To Start (Turkey) Hunting

I have always held the opinion that younger adults are a portion of the population that could be recruited into the lifestyle of hunting. After all, they have time and money to spend on it. They just need someone to guide them through the process of becoming a hunter, and then, of course, to take them to the field. I believe involving younger adults could prove to be one of the quickest and most cost-effective ways to generate a new …

The Addiction: Spring Wild Turkey Hunting

Truth be told, I’m finding it difficult to cope as I wait anxiously for Nebraska’s spring wild turkey hunting seasons to arrive. The days are getting longer, we’ve had some of those abnormally warm winter days, and hints of green are emerging on my lawn! Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m really looking forward to experiencing the spring migration of waterfowl and sandhill cranes, in addition to hunting snow geese, but it’s hard not to not think about wild turkeys in the springtime when there is …

Tuesdays are for Toms

Thought I’d share a few of my better photos of this past Tuesday’s spring shotgun wild turkey season hunt with you. One of the many reasons I love spring wild turkey hunting in Nebraska is calling in and watching a big, old tom like this one. The words of Ben Franklin ring true when I am observing wild turkeys. For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country. He is a Bird of bad …

Window to Nature

I’ve been in the field a lot archery/crossbow spring wild turkey hunting with my buddy, Jim Druliner, a.k.a. Jimmy D., from a portable, camouflaged, pop-up blind in rural eastern Nebraska. As I always say “hunting is not about the harvest, but the experience.” It has been an exciting experience seeing nature in early spring! Here are just some of the various wildlife species we’ve seen. Take a look with us through the lens. Before I began this blog, I was going to list all the reasons why I …

Nebraska: Nice Spring Turkey Hunting!

The Nebraska Tourism Commission announced this week that it approved a new brand campaign, entitled: “Nebraska Nice.” This campaign emphasizes one of Nebraska’s strongest assets — us, it’s people. However, “Nebraska Nice” has a two-fold meaning.  It’s not only about we-Nebraskan’s being nice to our visitors and to each other, as we are, but it’s also a reference to the “nice moments” that make the best vacations memorable and special.  It’s about that special moment that is talked about for years and years to come. …
