Thankful

The season for gratitude and reflection is upon us. Thanksgiving week is when we remind our families and friends how much they mean to us and express our sincere appreciation for what we have been given in life. While you are considering what you are thankful for, don’t forget nature. During the nine days of the recent firearm deer hunting season here in Cornhusker State, I selected thirteen things to be extremely grateful for while I was in the field. As you look …

Go Off the Grid in the Sandhills

“There is delight in the hardy life of the open.” – Theodore Roosevelt. My, my we are all are so reliant on the ‘grid’ of modern technology. With computers, the Internet, Smart phones, IPads and even the computerized sensors and chips that make our motor vehicles run, every move we make it seems cannot be done without entering the technological sphere. Oh, and let’s not forget about the convenience of electricity either.  All of this high-tech gadgetry is a positive thing in our daily lives, right? But wouldn’t it be nice to disconnect and take …

The Splendor of Solitude

I treasure my time spent alone in the woods, especially this time of year in Nebraska. If I don’t get some alone time in the great outdoors, I end up getting a little restless, grumpy and cabin fever-like (just ask my wife, Polly). For the record, I do not advocate venturing outdoors alone because of safety purposes, plus it is more fun and rewarding to share your outdoor adventures with others, but the alone time is essential! If you, like me, enjoy periodically going outdoors by yourself, please take …

A Season of Firsts

I’ve always said the outdoor world presents many different twists and turns, and that’s what makes it so intriguing! I compare entering the outdoor world anytime to going out on that first date: You’re excited, you’re nervous, you’re not wanting to forget anything, you’re probably overdressed and you’re wondering what eventualities might take place. But, I think spending as much time as possible in the field and trying new things improves your overall outdoor knowledge and skill level. In my mind, you’re able …

Come on, Disconnect for a Day!

What would it be like to go without ultra-modern technology? What if you had to give up your mobile communicating device (cell phone), iPad, iPod, laptop computer, digital cable television, satellite car radio, etc. for 24 hours. That would mean no texting, no Tweeting, no Facebook, no Snapchat, no Facetime, no IM-ing, none of that stuff! Could you do it?  Is it even remotely possible? I know, I know. Call me what you want. I’m an old fart, an “old schooler,” a soon-to-be grandpa. But, come on, face …

Capturing Cool Moments

“To photograph is to hold one’s breath, when all faculties converge to capture fleeting reality. It’s at that precise moment that mastering an image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy.” ~Henri Cartier-Bresson I have seen many cool things when I’ve been outdoors here in Nebraska, especially hunting. I just love being in the field! Years ago though, I never, ever packed a camera on my outdoor adventures. I know, I know, shame on me! But, now I bring a camera on every one of my outdoor expeditions. …

Out of Your Comfort Zone

I sincerely enjoy traveling, especially throughout our beautiful state of Nebraska. I can say that I have been to all 93 Nebraska counties for work purposes or outdoor pursuits. Another one of my ‘claims to fame’ is that I have driven every highway in the Cornhusker State. I have also floated all of Nebraska’s water trails. However, as an avid outdoor enthusiast, I think what’s important to do is to get out of your comfort zone and even consider venturing to another state. Enter into a different environment, a different …

Talk the Talk, Walk the Walk

With reference to my job as a conservation agency public information officer and participating in outdoor activities, I’ve always held myself to this motto: “If you’re gonna talk about it, you darn well better do it or have done it!” It should be noted though, if the truth be told, that I thoroughly enjoy a myriad of outdoor activities here in the Cornhusker State (you regular readers of my blog posts know this!). Time spent outdoors in the field is …

Book Review: Platte River Driftwood

I have to admit that I’m not much of a book reader. I do enjoy reading professional journal articles, hunting and fishing magazine articles as well as current and older NEBRASKAland magazine issues from cover to cover. However, I have been thoroughly enjoying a new book by a fellow outdoor/conservation compatriot, longtime Fremont High  School Teacher/Coach and Fremont Tribune Outdoor Writer — Bryce W. Lambley. Here’s a pic of Bryce with his deer taken by traditional archery equipment on December …

WHY I HUNT
