Deer Harvest Up Slightly from 2013

LINCOLN – The Nebraska deer harvest is up slightly from 2013. As of Dec. 5, 44,379 deer have been taken in all seasons, compared to 42,562 by the same date last year. The biggest change from last year is the mule deer buck harvest, which is up by 575 animals (9 percent). Whitetail antlerless harvest has increased by 944 (8 percent), and whitetail buck harvest is up 327 (1 percent). The mule deer antlerless harvest is down 14 (1 percent). …

A Western Nebraska Hunt for a Westerner

CRAWFORD – In order to find success, one hunter this week made the 430-mile journey from Western, Nebraska, to Western Nebraska. Yes, you read that right. Johnny Barta, a big game hunter from Western, Nebraska (the village near Fairbury, not the region), visited the butte country of western Nebraska (the region, not the village) to fill the state’s lone bighorn sheep tag. Christmas Bird Count at Ponca State Park

Join Ponca State Park for the Annual Christmas Bird Count on Sunday, December 14. Experienced and novice birders, nature enthusiasts, and families are invited to participate in this 115-year-old tradition sponsored by the National Audubon Society. Guests are advised to dress accordingly and to bring their binoculars and bird books. The event will begin at 7:30 a.m. in the Missouri National Recreational River Resource and Education Center. Target Shooting Prohibited at Three Lancaster County Public Hunting Areas

LINCOLN – Three public hunting areas in Lancaster County are being permanently closed to target shooting. As of Dec. 2, target shooting at Little Salt Creek Wildlife Management Area (WMA), Little Salt Creek West WMA and Helmuth Public Access Area is prohibited. Target shooting has been banned in these areas because safety concerns. Target shooters are encouraged to shoot at the Nebraska Game and Parks Outdoor Education Center at 4703 N. 44th St., Lincoln.

Flying WILD Educator Workshops Set for Lincoln, Gering

LINCOLN – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is offering two free educator workshops in January focusing on birds. These Project WILD workshops will offer educator training in the “Flying WILD: An Educator’s Guide to Celebrating Birds” curriculum and activity guide. Participants will learn about Nebraska’s bird species and how to use birds and bird watching to engage students in science, nature and being outdoors. Snowman Building Contest at Ponca State Park

The 1st Annual Snowman Building Contest at Ponca State Park started Saturday, November 29th with extremely challenging conditions. With highs in the 60s snow was scarce. However, Lee Brogie and her granddaughter Hazel took on the challenge. They found 2 patches of snow between the new playground and the East shelter and were able to construct this 8-inch snowman with a twig nose and a leaf hat. LINCOLN – A full schedule of programs is available in December at the Nebraska Game and Parks Outdoor Education Center in Lincoln. All current military personnel and veterans get a 50-percent discount on lane fees each Monday in December. Seniors ages 60 and up get the same discount on Fridays. LINCOLN – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission invites hunters and landowners to attend a public informational meeting in December to discuss big game issues. Meetings are scheduled in each Game and Parks district.
