Game and Parks receives NET grant for Cool-Water Stream Management project

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will receive $200,000 from the Nebraska Environmental Trust for the Cool-Water Stream Management project. This project involves cooperation with private landowners, government agencies and other organizations to manage and assess cold-water streams in Nebraska. It uses stewardship practices within watersheds and riparian zones, and stream enhancements to provide long-term benefits to landowners and aquatic communities. Rains cause flooding on some southeastern WMAs

LINCOLN, Neb. – Recent heavy rains have caused flooding on some wildlife management areas (WMA) in southeastern Nebraska. Water is over the west road leading into Yankee Hill WMA in Lancaster County, resulting in the road closure until water recedes. Caution should be used when accessing any WMA in southeastern Nebraska because of potentially dangerous water conditions.

Some access temporarily closed at Big Alkali Lake

LINCOLN, Neb. – High water and forecasted heavy rain at Big Alkali Lake Wildlife Management Area have forced the temporary closure to vehicle access of the rental cabins and recreational vehicle camping pads on the east side of the fish camp. Only foot traffic is allowed. The rest of the area remains open to all access. Access may be closed with little notice due to water over the entrance road.

Community Fishing Night cancelled at Lincoln’s Holmes Lake

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Community Fishing Night event scheduled for Tuesday, May 28 at Lincoln’s Holmes Lake has been cancelled by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. Parking lots and the trail around the lake flooded after heavy rain brought the lake level up. Drinking water access restored to Memphis State Recreation Area

LINCOLN, Neb. – Drinking water access has been restored at Memphis State Recreation Area in Saunders County. The area had been without drinking water since 2018 because of groundwater conditions, and guests were asked to bring their own water. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission worked with the Village of Memphis to restore drinking water to the 163-acre area. The area offers primitive camping, fishing, hiking and non-powered boating. LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will receive $55,000 from the Nebraska Environmental Trust for the Nebraska Natural Legacy Project: New Approaches to Biodiversity Conservation. This is the first year of the award, with a potential for second- and third-year funding totaling $315,000 and $200,000 respectively.
