Fruitcake Fling, Quest for Yule Log Highlight Winterfest at Ponca SP

LINCOLN – A full day of Winterfest activities are scheduled at Ponca State Park on Dec. 28.

The annual Fruitcake Fling, as seen on NBC’s Today Show last year, begins at noon. Toss bird-friendly fruitcakes for distance and try to win a prize. The family-friendly Quest for the Yule Log contest begins at 1:30 p.m. It includes a series of challenges and clues leading to the hidden Yule Log. Once found, the log will be cut and a piece will be burned in the Yule Log Bonfire. Teams of three to five people must register for the Quest for the Yule Log.

A variety of activities are available from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at the Missouri National Recreational River and Education Center. These include wreath making, card and cookie decorating, family holiday photographs by a NEBRASKAland Magazine photographer and an art display by Ponca-area youth. A $5 soup lunch will be served from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Free hayrack rides begin at 5 p.m.

Visit OutdoorNebraska.org for a complete schedule of Winterfest events or call the park at 402-755-2284 to register for the Quest for the Yule Log. A park entry permit is required.
