Birds from the Big Apple

As about 400 species make their way northward through Nebraska and the Central Flyway during Migratory Bird Month, here’s a story about three birds that moved into the region in a somewhat different manner.

The above map shows the paths five sandhill cranes trapped and banded in Nebraska last spring took to their breeding and wintering grounds.

Sandhill Crane Tracking

A sandhill crane banded and outfitted with a GPS unit in Nebraska ended up nesting south of the Bering Strait on the eastern trip of Russia, wintered in New Mexico and Texas, and is likely back in the Cornhusker State by now. The bird logged at least 11,000 miles.
