Ice Man Cometh???

Daryl Bauer, Fisheries Outreach Program Manager

Been blogging for several years now. Since my subject matter is usually fishing, always outdoor related, it is seasonal. The same topics come up every year about the same time on the calendar. For example, I annually crawl up on a soapbox and say something about ice safety. Might be doing that prematurely right now, but we do have some ice on some waters.

Having been around the state a bit in the past few days, was excited to see some waters entirely skimmed over with ice. When that happens many of us are chomping at the bit to get on that ice and drill some holes. Have checked the thickness on several waters already. None of them were even close to having safe ice. Looking at the forecast, I am not so sure that is going to improve as soon as we would like.

Just found this video posted by Jason Mitchell which I believe expresses a very good attitude we should have right now:

Believe me, I will be on the ice as soon as it is safe. However, learned a long time ago that safe ice does not happen just because we have a few nights with temperatures below freezing. It takes more than that. Yes, I am eager, anxious, but for now, still waiting.

You may find some safe ice on some small waterbodies soon. Just be sure!
