Spring Fish Die-Offs

005

There is no question the most common phone call/e-mail/FaceBook message I have received in the past few weeks has been about some dead fish in this or that location across Nebraska.  This has been widespread enough that we put out a news release last week: Spring fish die-offs not unusual in Nebraska LINCOLN, Neb. – Spring fish die-offs in Nebraska are not unusual. Reports of these fish kills – which have been due to natural causes – have come from …

Tiger Cats

DSCN2535a

I did not spend a lot of time on the water over the Memorial Day weekend, but that was alright.  We spent a lot of time with family.  Never fear, I did spend some time on the water; would have spent more if it were not for a nasty storm that blew up one evening.  From that little bit of time on the water, I can tell you one thing:  Right now the channel catfish are en fuego. Fishing reports …

How To Not Let the Big One Get Away

I do not do this often, but from time to time I will copy “stuff” I have found on other blogs or somewhere else on the interwebs and post it here on my blog.  This week my buddy Greg Wagner wrote a great blog on not just hooking big fish but then landing them, and what to do with them after they are landed.  Yes, I talked to Greg while he was writing his blog and he quotes me in …

My son and I did some hunting in southeast Nebraska and then a little over a week later slipped out west.  We had a family celebration to attend to, my daughter graduated from NCTA (Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture) in Curtis so naturally we were out for that.  Emily got a diploma and a nifty-looking belt buckle; I got a …

Learn to Fly Catch

FlycastingCrop

I will admit it.  Some of us who are really serious about our fishing can get a little too uptight sometimes.  At the risk of stereotyping certain anglers, well, let’s just say Hank Patterson puts things in perspective! Seriously, fly-catching can be the best way to fish at certain times, and who cares how well you cast?  You know what?  The fish don’t care a bit, especially bluegills! Get out there and practice your fly-catching, and have fun doing it! …

Spring Turkey 2018, Chapter 1

IMG_1579 (2)

Once again this blog will be interrupted from its usual fish and fishing content because its author has been distracted by gobbling turkeys.  Actually, Nebraska’s spring turkey season has been ongoing for several weeks now, about time to give a report. . . . One advantage that Nebraska offers spring turkey hunters is the ability to hunt statewide on the same permit.  Each spring I enjoy some casual hunts close to home, when time allows, as well as some more …
