It Is Spring, Walleye Spawn is On

Mentioned a couple of weeks ago that spring is a busy time for Nebraska fisheries professionals. One of the biggest tasks every year is the collection of walleye eggs to produce walleyes for stocking throughout Nebraska.

Pretty much every year of my fisheries career in Nebraska I have helped collect walleyes and walleye eggs somewhere in Nebraska. It is an annual tradition!

I have blogged about that annual spring work several times. Again, without writing a bunch of words, to demonstrate what we are doing right now, how about a video?

We plan to collect in excess of 900 quarts of walleye eggs this spring. Those efforts will occur primarily at Sherman and Merritt reservoirs. However, at times, if we need a few more eggs, later, we may collect some fish at McConaughy.

The work occurs night and day, early in April. It is wet, cold, windy, and at times uncomfortable. We love it!
