Indianola man seriously injured in hunting incident

An Indianola man was seriously injured in a deer hunting incident at about 5 p.m. Nov. 20 in Red Willow County. The 20-year-old was accidentally shot by a rifle belonging to a 54-year-old male who was following him and another hunter up an embankment. The man was flown to Bryan West Medical Trauma Center in Lincoln for treatment of his injuries. This is the fourth hunting incident reported in 2022 and the third in three days. PATH offers mentored hunting for youth over holiday breaks

Plenty of mentored hunting opportunities exist over the holidays for youth under age 18 through the Passing Along the Heritage Program. Lake Wanahoo in Saunders County has seven units totaling 1,067 acres available for mentored youth hunting. Other PATH sites are also available. PATH provides Nebraska youth and their mentors access to hunt on private lands and selected public lands without other hunter competition. Only youth under age 18 may hunt on these sites. Second season underway for limited river otter trapping

Nebraska’s limited river otter harvest season opened Nov. 1, providing those with a valid fur harvest permit an opportunity to trap one otter per season. The season closes Feb. 28, 2023, or three days after the 125th otter has been harvested in the state, whichever comes first. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s goal is to manage and maintain healthy, thriving populations for the long term. Kissinger WMA reopens to public

Kissinger Wildlife Management Area near Fairfield has reopened to all visitors, including hunters and wildlife watchers, following a temporary closure to protect whooping cranes using the area. Two endangered whooping cranes were present at the WMA since Oct. 19, utilizing the wetland as their roosting spot and nearby area as their feeding grounds. Hunters reminded to donate to Hunters Helping the Hungry

Hunters are reminded they may donate harvested deer to the Hunters Helping the Hungry program at seven processor locations in Nebraska. The participating meat processors are: Amherst – Belschner Custom Meats Norfolk – R&M Meats North Platte – Kelley’s Custom Pack Table Rock – Den’s Country Meats Franklin – Franklin Locker Ulysses – The Butchery Lindsay – Melcher’s Locker Hunters pay no processing costs for deer donated to processors for this  program. Upland hunters find variable success on opening weekend

Hunters returned to rural Nebraska the weekend of Oct. 29 for the 2022 upland bird hunting season opener and found variable success. Based on field reports from Nebraska Game and Parks Commission staff and law enforcement, pheasant hunters had the greatest success in parts of northeast and south-central Nebraska, including the Rainwater Basin. Many hunters also found good numbers of quail, especially throughout their core range in south-central and southeastern Nebraska.
