Spined

By Daryl Bauer, Fisheries Outreach Program Manager

Spent an evening fishing with my son earlier this month. We did not even go out to fish until evening, until it had cooled a bit. Looked like it would be a good night and Daniel did scratch one nice walleye.

I had one other fish swirl on my bait. We thought we would get more, but as is typical of mid-summer, one fish was all.

It was not a big walleye, but a nice one. I snapped a few photos anyway. Daniel released the fish. I did not know it at the time, but walleyes have some spines too and my son got poked by one while handling the fish.

Turns out that one poke ended up being painful and the wound persisted for a couple of weeks. Finally, Daniel worked a broken walleye spine out if it.

His finger felt better right away.

However, he has developed a craving for a new flavor of potato chips.

Have a great weekend! Handle ’em right, both for the fish’s sake and for yours!
