Nebraska’s popular spring shotgun wild turkey hunting season occupies center stage on my outdoor television segment on Omaha’s WOWT 6 News this week. That’s because the spring shotgun turkey opener is this Saturday, April 12th! I don’t know about you but I am so pumped up for it! I’ll be offering a safety reminder or two plus few hunting tips for those of you going turkey hunting this spring. A …

Kids, Turkeys and Tips

If you’re a seasoned, veteran turkey hunter like me, one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll find is to take a kid to the field for the spring season! No question! Be sure to check the regulations/requirements for youth turkey hunting here in Nebraska. You’ll note that there are no minimum age restrictions and that the youth turkey hunting permit price is only $5.00! Conservation Officer Rich Berggren of Waterloo, NE, myself, and many, many others at Game and Parks …

Spring Gobbler Withdrawals, The Cure

The temperature is hovering around zero degrees Farenheit outside of our house in Omaha’s Metcalfe Park neighborhood this early March morning. I’ve now begun to count the days until the archery edition of Nebraska’s spring wild turkey hunting seasons kicks off. I’m certain that the birds on my hunting property are still bunched up as they were a couple weeks ago. It shouldn’t be too much longer before wild turkey courtship rituals enter the picture, right? I know that breeding is dictated by photoperiod (day length or amount …

Gobbler #3 – The Chocolate Tom

My 2013 Nebraska spring wild turkey hunting season is complete. Took Gobbler #3 Saturday evening hunting in the woodlands of northern Douglas County with Son Zach Wagner. If you’re curious, according to …

After getting permission from Gene and Kelsey Timperely, we headed back to ranch country. Andy Smith had joined me at Eppley Airfield and Jon Donner drove in from Minneapolis.  Preliminary scouting showed the flock likely to use the same roost area so we were set for the next morning!  …

Just Messin’ with the Turkeys

Okay, today I had more fun than should be allowed spring wild turkey hunting! I continue to do what I call are observation sessions with wild turkeys (even though I am toting crossbow equipment, calls, etc. to perhaps bag a gobbler if I feel like it during this archery period). I have purchased all three of my Nebraska spring wild turkey hunting permits and habitat stamp and know full well the season is a long one with outstanding numbers of …
