Cornhusker Fly Fishers

Want to mention another excellent Nebraska fishing organization, the Cornhusker Fly Fishers.  They meet monthly at our Ak-Sar-Ben Aquarium south of Gretna.  If you check their calendar, you will see that this is a very active bunch of anglers doing fly-tying, fishing events, casting classes, meetings and a whole lot more.  Many of them are volunteer fishing instructors and also help with kid’s fishing events, family fishing nights, sport shows, and Expos.  If you are an angler, especially a fly angler, …

And He Can Play Guitar Too!

eric-700x525-96a7644e-8325-4bea-91d8-a3ffd04deea9

I heard a radio talk show driving to work this week that brought this story to my attention.  Of course they had not a clue about the fish or fishing, so I looked into it more and found that this is really cool! This comes from Men’s Journal online: Eric Clapton Just Caught the Year’s Biggest Salmon in Iceland Rock & roll legend. World-class guitarist. Record-setting angler? Turns out that Eric Clapton, one of the greatest musicians of all time, …

Carping

IMG_20140916_162223_014

The fisheries biologist side of me will always tell you what a scourge invasive carp are to our aquatic habitats, water quality and sport fish populations.  Common carp have been here for over a hundred years and have been detrimental to a lot of our fisheries.  Pointy-headed fisheries managers will continue to manage carp populations by eliminating them as much as possible in some situations. On the other hand, as an angler, I will tell you that we are always …

World Records

Thinking about something to post on my blog for a Friday, hmm, let me think. . . . I know, it has to be the recent catch of a big fish, A HUGE FISH!!!! You all know that almost everything I blog about concerning hunting, fishing and trapping is NEBRASKA hunting, fishing and trapping.  But, I am a hardcore angler, fish are on my mind all the time, and this week there has been a story about a huge muskie caught …

Adventure Report–“Back in White”

It had been awhile, but my family and I finally were able to get back to the western Nebraska panhandle last week.  We stayed a couple of nights at Ft. Robinson, and did a lot of things while we were out “west”:  senior pictures, attended a wedding, saw a lot of sights, and spent time with family.  But, you know the fishing gear went with us and my son and I put it to use. The Pine Ridge region of …

Adventure Report, Spring Toothies

Been a busy spring for me, and I have not blogged about any fishing that I have been doing for awhile.  Oh, I have been fishing, you can count on that, I just have had plenty of other stuff to blog about.  So, let me show some pictures and give a little update. My son and I met up with my trout-bum nephew for a trip this spring.  As a matter of fact, Seth, had just returned from guiding fly-fishermen …

The Art of Fly Fishing

I am not sure where I found this, believe it was e-mailed to me, but I know it is good and I am going to recommend you check it out.  Orvis has a series of fly-fishing instructional videos they will e-mail you if you sign up, The Art of Fly Fishing . I am NOT some fly-fishing purist by any means, and I am not sponsored by Orvis.  My philosophy is that I want to catch fish and I will use …
