The northern catalpa is a tree you likely recognize but may not know by name.

Perhaps you’ve seen it adorned with striking clusters of large, white flowers, standing out like a snow cone amid otherwise green woodlands.

Or maybe, as a child, you were grudgingly sent outside to rake up its huge fallen leaves cluttering the yard.

Most memorably, you and your friends may have ventured into the woods, plucked a few of the catalpa’s cigar-shaped seed pods and pretended to smoke them.

Like most wildflowers, the coneflowers’ showy, colorful blooms are designed to attract pollinators, mainly butterflies and bees. However, these plants, along with other members of the sunflower family, use a bit of trickery. What looks like a single large flower is actually a cluster of many small flowers, arranged to mimic one big bloom.

From California to North Carolina to Massachusetts, people from across the country gathered on a recent Saturday at Fontenelle Forest in Bellevue, Nebraska, for its first-ever “Spike Spectacular.” The event offered a unique chance to meet internet stars Spike and George, two eastern screech owls, in person.

As a fellow Spike enthusiast and contributor to Nebraskaland Magazine, I had the pleasure of shooting photos that evening, plus getting to meet some of Fontenelle’s amazing staff.

The joy I witnessed in this sold-out crowd, from folks of all ages and walks of life, truly touched me. And the stars of the show did great, even posing for multiple selfies after the official program wrapped up.
