Many SRAs, WMAs temporarily banning campfires; turkey hunters urged to use caution

Due to drought conditions and extreme fire danger, many Nebraska state recreation areas and some wildlife management areas are temporarily banning campfires until further notice. Oct. 23-24 youth pheasant season includes Special Youth Hunts

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Oct. 23-24 statewide youth pheasant, quail, and partridge season for hunters ages 15 and younger provides an excellent opportunity to mentor new hunters. “Each fall, the youth season provides a great opportunity to get young family members and friends out hunting in a more controlled environment,” said John Laux, upland game program manager for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. Prescribed burns planned for two southeast WMAs

LINCOLN, Neb. – Prescribed burns are planned on two Nebraska Game and Parks Commission wildlife management areas (WMA) in southeast Nebraska, if weather conditions allow. Burns are planned at Taylor’s Branch WMA in Pawnee County and Osage (southeast tract) WMA in Johnson County. Other prescribed burns on WMAs may be planned later this summer. Rains cause flooding on some southeast WMAs

LINCOLN, Neb. – Recent rains have caused flooding on some wildlife management areas (WMA) in southeast Nebraska. Water is over the west road leading into Yankee Hill WMA in Lancaster County, resulting in the road closure until water recedes. The Peru Boat Ramp in Nemaha County and the Schilling WMA in Cass County are closed to access due to high flows from the Missouri River. Game and Parks to Release Pheasants at 10 Wildlife Management Areas

LINCOLN – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will release rooster pheasants at 10 wildlife management areas in time for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The 10 areas are: Oak Valley (Madison County), Wilkinson (Platte County), Sherman Reservoir (Sherman County), Pressey (Custer County), Branched Oak (Lancaster County), Yankee Hill (Lancaster County), Twin Oaks (Johnson County), Hickory Ridge (Johnson County), Cornhusker (Hall County), and Peru Bottoms (Nemaha County).
