What Lurks Beneath?

imag1007

I have some piles of data on my messy desk right now; I am putting stuff together for the 2017 Fishing Forecast.  It should be done and available near the first of the year, just like it is every year.  I will be sure to get the word out when it is ready. . . . Until then, I know that no matter how much I say or what data I show, nothing beats some pictures!  So, to tease you …

Happy Halloweeny

walleyemoutheyesa

Today is Halloween.  I feel obligated to do a Halloween blog. Fishing kayaks have become very popular in the past few years.  I have not purchased one yet.  I am waiting for the fishing pumpkins thing to take off. My kids carved several fish or wildlife-themed pumpkins over the years.  Here are some of the photos I could still find. I would go fishing tonight, but I am afraid of running into the devil mink, Or a scary fish with a …

Quick Report on Hot July Adventures

IMG_0164

I have been “out and about” on a couple of trips in the past few weeks.  Those trips were for events where my attendance was requested.  Pretty much everywhere I go, all the time, the fishing gear goes with me and I work in at least a little time for myself on the water.  Yes, that is my job too, but it is also who I am!  It has always been that way. In an earlier blog post I mentioned how …

Tech Committee Meetings

I try not to bore folks too much with my day-to-day job activities here on my blog.  But, I want to share with you one thing I did last week. . . . The corollary to the fishing is always better in some other state (Grass is always greener), is “Why don’t you do what the biologists in _______________ are doing?” (fill in blank with whatever state you choose where the fishing is better).  I hope folks understand that we …

Fish Handling, Tournaments

DSCN5892

A week ago I blogged about some fish handling issues that needed to be addressed according to recent reports from the water.  Actually, I do not know that folks really need another lesson on proper handling of fish that by law must be released, as much as they need an attitude adjustment.  I never know who reads my “stuff”, hopefully it made someone stop and think. This week I want to return to the same topic, but I want to take …

Fish Handling

DSCN2686a

I was going to blog about something different today, but I just heard some talk about hot Walleye bites on Nebraska reservoirs and folks having problems releasing fish that they by regulation have to release.  I do not know why this is any kind of a problem any more–we have had a variety of length limit regulations for a variety of species for a lot of years now and catch and release is a routine part of fishing!  Either by regulation …

“My What Big Teeth You Have!”

798365_478124415577644_173104564_o

I love big predator fish.  Duh.  Of course part of that comes from the fact that they are just plain big fish, and what angler does not love big fish?  But, it is more than that.  I marvel at the big predator fish in particular because there is such raw power and mystique about them.  It is the same reason I believe that mink, bobcats, coyotes, wolverines, mountain lions, and great whites are such cool creatures.  There is a pure, …

It Is That Time of Year, Again!

DSCN5636

I hate to repeat “stuff” on my blog, but when talking about fish and fishing, a lot of what happens occurs seasonally, at about the same time every year.  For example, it is early April and that means the walleyes are spawning.  Oh sure, the exact timing of the walleye spawn will vary a bit from year to year, but photoperiod or the amount of daylight is an important cue for the walleye spawn and thus it occurs about the …

Let me mention one more fishing seminar that I know is happening this spring.  This one is coming up this coming Saturday, March 19: I am planning to be there as you can see from the schedule.  I promise, I will not have much to say, I want to listen to the other speakers!!!!! If you are interested, here is where you can find out more and get tickets, Walleye Wisdom Workshop, Lincoln, NE. I must add, as of right …

McConaughy Spinnerbait Trolling

DSCN3030

I love to see Nebraska waters on fishing shows, and every time I find one I can share with you, you can count on my doing just that.  The most recent one I am aware of is by The Next Bite TV.  They did an episode last year on McConaughy highlighting a very unique presentation for catching walleyes, a presentation that originated in Nebraska!  Here is is, watch it, watch it all! The anglers in the show are professional walleye …
